Our Plastic Oceans- Eli G

"Our Plastic Oceans" is a really interesting article. It talks and informs us about the harm we are causing on our oceans. Most of it we probably know, yet nobody does anything to stop it. Everybody thinks that it doesn't harm anything. It hurts the animals and it also hurts us.
I think "What's being done?" is a pretty good passage to focus on. What exactly is being done? Nothing. Absolutely nothing. If anything we're just hurting our cause. The Chinese are the main ones at fault here. People have tried banning plastic straws and plastic bags. I honestly don't think that's going to help one bit. People are still going to be slobs. People are still going to find a way to trash our environment and make it a living hell for everyone and the animals.
In my opinion, this "Great Pacific Garbage Patch" shouldn't even exist. There is no call for people to be this lazy. People need to get up off their butts and try to make a change in this world. We need to clean this place up.

Our Plastic Oceans- Hailey Carr

"Our Plastic Oceans" is a very intriguing article. It mainly talks about the pollution that is in our oceans. This articles informs people of how bad the pollution actually is, where it comes from, how it affects marine life, what is being done about it, and how we can fix the damage that we caused. After reading the article, the  most important section to me was "Is it affecting marine life?"
"Is it affecting marine life?" is the most important to me, because I didn't realize how much the pollution actually affects the animals. I never knew that the pollution caused the fish to be smaller in size or not as smart as other animals. It was quite shocking to me to read this section, because it informed me of so much stuff. I never realized that the plastic was being ate by whales, and then later causing them to die. So, if the whales are eating the pollution, that means all of the other marine life is, and eventually if we don't stop filling the oceans with pollution, some animals are going to go extinct.
The most shocking factor to me is that even though all of us known how much pollution we are putting into the water, no one is doing anything to stop it. We are continuing to create a large amount of pollution and we are allowing it to go into the oceans. The only thing is that even if we started to clean the pollution from the oceans, it would take years. However, it would be completely worth it in the long run to know that the marine life would be better off.

Our Plastic Oceans ~ Katie Towery

(I just responded to the essay as a whole and listed things I found interesting)

I think the author was smart in the way they organized their article, grabbing your attention with a startling fact: "A garbage truck's worth of plastic enters the world's oceans every minute." They then tell you about their topic, and connect the reader to their essay through the paragraph about "Are humans at risk?" which forces you to be involved in the subject. The author also seems to organize their essay in a logical and chronological way. They explain how bad the pollution of plastic and waste is, where it comes from, the risks to humans and marine life, then the author seems to reel the reader back from the shocking facts to tell the them about what is being done about the matter. The article tries to persuade you to take action to save the water and marine life from pollution of plastic by making you aware of the problems plastic pollution is causing and making you sympathetic towards the subject.

I'm really surprised that China is the main contributor to plastic waste getting thrown in the ocean, about thirty percent, and also with the United States ranking twentieth out of the world, as stated in "Where's it coming from?"  I am also shocked to know that plastic pollution is in deodorant and toothpaste, as well as synthetic fibers. Although, it doesn't seem to shock me that not many people are supporting the movement of using less plastic, as many products are made of plastic and many companies gain money from making and producing plastic. Not many people support the cause most likely because they don't see it directly affecting them, because they tend to think things that happen in the ocean won't ever affect them and are ignorant to it it possibly affecting them in the future.

How bad is the pollution?
Humans have caused a huge increase in pollution in the ocean. According to the passage, a garbage truck’s worth of plastic goes into the ocean every minute. We have caused 14 million tons of plastic pollution into the seas. The waves and the ultraviolet light have broken the trash, making the trash invisible from the people just looking over the side of a boat. The passage says that 99.9% of the trash is plastic, and it could have been recycled instead of just thrown into the ocean or other waterways that lead into the sea. The plastic in the ocean causes trouble for the animal life that live in here. All of the pollution could potentially kill the animals that live here and end a species. The World Economic Forum says that there would be more plastic, by weight, in the ocean than fish by 2050. That is crazy, especially when it is easy to recycle the plastic. Littering also helps cause this problem with people just throwing trash on the beach instead of throwing it in a safer place. This needs to be changed because if the fish species gets wiped out, there will be a decline in the process of fishing to sell as food. The water could also get too polluted to even get in when visiting the beach. The sad thing is that the scientists do not know how long it will take for the amount of plastic being thrown in the water everyday will subside.

Our Plastic Oceans - Brittany Fulcher

I'm just gonna do the second possible response question, and discuss a move made by the writer that I believe is interesting and explain it.

In this article, the writer makes a paragraph dedicated to how plastic pollution could be a risk to human life, not just marine life. This is a smart and strong move made by the writer because if people believe they are being affected, not just animals, they will open their ears and start listening. Even with his or her's evidence not being clear, just the words humans and risk together will catch people's attention.
Plastic is not just a risk to marine life, humans are at risk too. According to evidence given by the writer, 83 percent of the worlds drinking water is contaminated, and 93 percent of the water contains some plastic. It might not be doing anything to humans now, but it could cause some kind of problem in the future. No one pays attention to that though because it has not been advertised like the effects plastic pollution has on oceans and marine life. It was never even intended for plastic to cause this much of a problem. Now it is everywhere and no one knows what to do about, not really anyway.
Maybe if it is brought to people's attention, the progress made to solve the issue would be further looked into or worked on faster. The writer gave information on what he or she knows about pretty much everything to do about plastic pollution. Maybe since they included the risk humans could face, more people will do the same and something will be done. That is why I believe it was a smart move to include that paragraph in the article.

Our Plastic Oceans - Alexis Butler

As a whole, "Our Plastic Oceans" is a disturbing yet interesting essay. The main topic is the pollution in our oceans. This essay describes how bad the pollution is, where it comes from, where it goes, the effects on both human and animals, and what is being done. All of these sections are terrifying, but one in particular stands out to me. "Is it affecting marine life?" was the most shocking in my eyes.
"Is it affecting marine life" explains the known effects of polluted water on the animals who live in it. Polluted water effects the psychological state of fish in heavily polluted areas. These fish tend to be less intelligent, have less agility, and smaller than fish in cleaner waters. Another effect on animals in polluted habitats is they are more likely to die. These fish are more prone to swallow trash and prevent the digestion of food.
The worst thing to me is the fact that humans know about this problem. We know trash is bad for the ocean, yet we still dump it. We know trash kills marine life in alarming numbers, yet we don't care. These animals are forced to live in a mess that humans made. They suffer everyday and have short lives, but we don't care. Even for those who do care about this problem, efforts are not taking place as fast as the trash is being dumped.
At this rate, our oceans will never be clean. Even if humans were to step up and take drastic new measures to clean the ocean, there will always be those animals that unfairly died. By throwing our trash into the ocean, we are digging a grave for an animal.

Buddhism v. Christianity
Buddhism is a religion revolving around Siddhartha Gautama’s teachings. He believed that suffering is the root of all evil, basically, and the goal of this religion is to reach nirvana, which is a state of total peace. Christianity revolves around Jesus Christ’s teachings, and the mission is to spread His word of how God created the world and to worship Him. That is what will save you. (“Buddhism vs Christianity”) Both of these religions do have a set of beliefs, customs, and practices. Some are very much alike, such as always being generous, improving your well-being, and more. Some couldn’t be any more different, like what happens after death. Regardless, these religions are quite interesting and can even help people. There are many great similarities and differences between Buddhism and Christianity, and learning about them could even possibly benefit you in everyday life.
Believe it or not, Buddhism and Christianity are a lot more alike than you may think. Many of these similarities that they share are just basic customs and rules we go by every day, such as treating others fairly, helping people, and, well, not murdering others. Others are things the more religious people go by, like improving your wellbeing and conquering hate with love. Even so, these religions are very much alike.
Three of the similarities between Buddhism and Christianity are as followed: to be generous, to help others who need it, and to improve your well-being. Dāna (or generosity) is one of the main central practices in Buddhism. This doesn’t mean just giving someone something because they want it, or just because you’re throwing it out. Your intention is just as important as giving something away. It may be seen as a greater act to give something away you may still use.  If you’re throwing leftovers out with the intention of insects and animals eating it, that’s still being generous, and that’s good. Your intention should be pure. (Liusuwan)
It’s the same with Christianity, seeing as Acts 20:35 says “...remembering the words the Lord Jesus himself said: ‘It is more blessed to give than to receive.’” (NIV, Acts 20:35) Don’t just throw money in a bag that is collected by your church, because more likely than not, your church already has enough money. Being generous is giving to those who truly are in need of help.
One of the unspoken goals of these two religions is to improve your well-being. The Buddha wants you to learn to respect all life-forms including, yourself, others, and nature. You meditate, which is scientifically proven to improve your health. You’re advised to not get stuck in the past or to think about the future which can decrease stress, which in turn makes you healthier and gives you a better mindset. The Buddha taught, which can lead to the same results, is  “the mind is everything. What you think, you become.” (Health Fitness Revolution)
With Christianity, prayer is usually the key to any problems in life you may face, and that can significantly reduce stress. You feel like there’s someone watching over you making you feel safe, and also more confident with how you can handle your problems. You trust that everything will work out okay in the end as long as you believe and pray. Feeling this security with God can definitely improve some part of your mental wellbeing. (“The Health and Wellbeing Benefits of Active and Positive Christian Belief.”)
More similarities between these two summed up are to just be kind to others; to love everyone and your enemies always, to help others in need, to follow the Golden Rule, to not judge others, and to not kill. To love others from Buddhism and Christianity quoted is: “Let your thoughts of boundless love pervade the whole world,” (Sutta Nipata 149-150), and “This is my commandment, that you love one another as I have loved you,” (ESV, John 15:12). When it comes to loving your enemies according to the Buddhist religion, you should always overcome the angry, the selfish, the lying, etc, with the opposite emotion for each. When it comes to Christianity, Luke 6:27 says to “Love your enemies, do good to those who hate you.” (NIV) In turn, loving everyone can make you feel more content in your life, which contributes to your well-being.
All of our lives, the Golden Rule has been drilled into our heads. It’s typically told as it is in the Bible which is, “Do to others as you would have them do to you.” (NIV, Luke 6:31) But this rule doesn’t just stem from Christianity. In fact, it stems from Buddhism as well. Dhammapada 10:1 says “Consider others as yourself.” Judging and killing others kind of go hand in hand with the Golden Rule. Both religions believe that judging others is easier to do than to judge yourself and that if you judge others, you, in turn, will be judged right back. “A man winnows his neighbor’s faults like chaff, but his own fault he hides.” (Dhammapada 252).  “Judge not, that you not be judged.” ( NKJV, Matthew 7:1).
There are five precepts to Buddhism. The first one is to not kill any living thing, especially humans and animals- and definitely not large animals. You are not to indirectly support killing, such as in any way helping someone hunt. Some even say you shouldn’t even think about killing because it damages the mind. (“Buddhism - The Three Jewels and Five Precepts.”)
Now, Christianity has the Ten Commandments. The sixth commandment is the one that tells you not to kill. It’s simply quoted in Exodus 20:13: “You shall not murder.” (NIV) Another source says “... man is unique. He was made in the image of God. Since God is the One who gave life, only He has the prerogative to take life.” (“What The Ten Commandments Really Mean: 6th Commandment”).
We now know all about their similarities, but what about their differences? There are differences between the practices and the goal of these religions. Also, what happens after you die? The religions each have their own thing to say when it comes to these topics.
Rather than praying, which is a big part of Christianity, Buddhists meditate. Meditating helps change how your mind works and makes you more aware. When you want to remove dissatisfaction and suffering from your life, you practice the “rights.” The right view/understanding (which is seeing things as they truly are without influence), the right thinking (setting your life on a positive path), the right speech (honesty and kindness), the right conduct (selfless, peaceful, and honest behavior), the right livelihood (avoiding work that harms others in any way or that diverts you from your beliefs and practices), the right effort (try to make a balance between a spiritual and average life), the right mindfulness (aware of your body, feeling, mind, thoughts, and emotions; avoiding selfishness), and the right concentration (focusing to reach enlightenment through meditation and discipline). (“Core Beliefs In Buddhism”)
Following the guidelines of the five precepts is another Buddhist practice. These are to avoid murdering all living things, not taking things from others if it’s not given to you first, to avoid sexual misconduct, to avoid lying, and to not take or use anything that can cloud your judgment. (“Buddhism - The Three Jewels and Five Precepts.”)
One of the largest practices of Christianity is prayer. This is the communication between the person praying and God. You can pray silently, out loud, or written. Many Christians pray before meals, before bed, or in church. Many also attend a church (or many over time) where they learn more about God, the Bible, and what everything means according to God. There they also praise and sing gospel songs. Many Christians attend a Bible study, where they simply study the Bible.   Baptism is also an important part of this religion. That’s when you either have water sprinkled on your head or to be immersed in water. This signifies a new life with Jesus and joining others who believe. Christians spread the word by telling people about God and they try to recruit members to believe in Him. (“Christian Practices.”)
What happens after death according to the Buddhist religion is very complex. It’s determined by karma. If a person has good actions throughout their life, they will have good results. Not having any bad actions can mean that you have good karma, but it’s even better to practice generosity, righteousness, mediation, and so on. Bad actions cause bad karma, and those actions include lying, stealing, killing, and so on once again. Then there’s neutral karma, no bad actions, and no good actions; just eating, sleeping, breathing, and other basic human acts. After you die, if you haven’t reached nirvana, there are six planes you can be reborn into determined by your karma. Three of them are good, and three of them are bad. If you have good karma, you can be born into the realm of demigods, gods, or man. Demigods and gods have many things that they enjoy that humans do not have the luxury of doing. The only downside of this is that they feel constant envy. If you’re born into mankind, of course they will lack benefits that demigods and gods have, but they don’t have to suffer from the downside that the other two realms do. Mankind does have the opportunity to reach nirvana, though, which is the greatest thing to have. In the case that you have bad karma, you will be born into the realms of animals, ghosts, or hell. All of these planes cause intense suffering, more than you can imagine. You will stop being reborn once you reach nirvana. It is described as “a state of being that is realized through eliminating desire.”  Some think that nirvana is a place with eternal bliss, and others think nirvana is simply nothingness. It is only reached with a lot of effort and over a plethora of lifetimes. (“Comparing Christianity and Buddhism;” “Buddhism: Beliefs about Death;” “Basics of Buddhism”)
According to Christianity for what happens after death, you only have one lifetime with one chance. You either go to Heaven or Hell. If you go to Heaven, “believers will be taken into the presence of Christ in heaven.”  Heaven is supposed to be a place of glory, much better than anything on Earth. Once you arrive, it’s supposed to feel like you’re finally where you belong. You’re made perfect and cleansed from any sin, and since you’re only your soul, you look forward to the day when your body is resurrected from your grave. You live forever in Heaven with Christ. (“What Happens at Death?”) Those who didn’t trust or believe, though, they’ll be separated from God and excluded from Heaven. They’ll be sent to Hell with all the other non-believers and sinners. They sufferer forever in torment with a raging fire that will never go out. Hell is supposed to be worse than any suffering and torment on Earth. (“What Happens in Hell”)
While there is a similarity with one small goal, there’s also another goal that is very different intended for these religions. With Buddhism, the goal is to reach nirvana and escape the process of reincarnation. To do this, you have to eliminate all mental suffering. With Christianity, it’s to love God and obey His commandments all while creating a relationship with Him. You’re also supposed to spread the word to everyone about what He has done for us, to worship Him, and finally, to be released from sin. (“Buddhism vs Christianity.”)
As you’ve read, there are a number of similarities and differences between Buddhism and Christianity. Some of the similarities being almost identical, and some of the differences couldn’t be any farther apart. We understand the importance of being kind and content with yourself and life, and to always be generous and help others. We also know the differences, how many of the practices and beliefs are different from each other. Both of these religions do have a great impact on people, making people feel better about themselves, and maybe even their lives. These religions are so much alike and so different, but both great.

Which is better Chevy or Ford?

Many people drive trucks daily for different purposes. Some people drive trucks for work, some people might use them for racing, and others just have them as personal daily drivers. There are many different trucks out on the market that people drive. There is Chevy, Gmc, Dodge, Nissan, Ford, Toyota, and many more. The most driven on the roads today are chevy and fords. Both of these trucks get used everyday for racing, working, and daily driving, But which ones are truly better at each thing? What makes these trucks better than one another and how are they similar to each other?
Chevy and Fords are driven everyday all across the world for different purposes but which one is better? Chevy and Fords are used a lot  as work trucks. They are used on farms, for construction, and for people that tow heavy things. One of these trucks are better for working? Chevys have steel bodies unlike a ford. The steel body is very strong compared to Ford's aluminum bodies that bend and dent easily. Chevys steel can withstand much more weight and tension unlike a ford. The chevys also have a 6.6 liter duramax engine that produces 445 horsepower and 910 foot pounds of torque. Ford produces 450 horsepower and 935 foot pounds of torque. So both of these trucks would be great work trucks, chevys are more durable, and fords can pull just a tad bit more.
Many people race trucks on a drag strip and on a street. Some people put lots of mods on their trucks to make them faster but in this comparison they are stock trucks with a stock motor and drivetrain. Which one of these trucks are really actually faster ford f150 or chevy silverado 1500? Chevys come stock with a 5.3 liter v8 vortec engine that produces 270 horsepower and 315 foot of torque. Which is pretty good.  A ford truck comes stock with a twin turbo 2.7 liter ecoboost that produces 325 horsepower and 400 foot of torque. That is also pretty good. If you was to line these trucks up it would be a pretty good race until the fords turbos spooled up. Then the ford would leave the chevy, the ford would win by a mile in stock street racing. Both of these trucks are fairly fast but the ford would take the win on this comparison.  So ford has the faster truck.
Many people drive these trucks just as a daily driver. So which one would be better as an everyday ride. A chevy silverado get 18 mpg in the city and 24 mpg on the highway. Chevys also come with a backup camera, push button four wheel drive, a big bonus is that the chevy’s come cheaper, and are rated as the longest lasting truck. Also on the Chevy you’ll find features like a sunroof, navigation, automatic wipers and high-beams, an active noise cancellation system, a trailer brake controller, and a wireless charger for cell phones.  A ford f150 gets 18 in the city and 25 on the highway. A ford is a little more expensive compared to the chevy, but they come with much more room and other goodies. Such as, keyless push-button ignition, a panoramic moonroof, a nifty integrated tailgate step, adaptive cruise control, a self-parking system and an automated trailer-backing system. The chevys are a rougher riding but yet more durable truck. The fords are a smoother ride but more prone to break and mess up. Chevy also offers V6 engine and two V8s, all designed specifically for use in trucks and are designed to deliver strong low-end torque for low-speed pulling power. Ford offers a few options also, they have one V8, two V6, and one V4 that are designed for a few different things such as speed and gas mileage.  So really either of these could be a great daily driver, just depends on personal preference.
Both of these trucks have their pros and cons about them. They each are good for different kinds of people depending on their occupation. Chevy’s are better work trucks. Fords are faster and pull a bit more. Both would be great for daily drivers. After comparing these two awesome trucks. My personal preference would be a chevy just for the fact that to me they have better quality, since fords break easy and tend to have more problems. Also with them messing up often it tends to get really expensive, and fords parts are already more expensive. Which one of these rides would you want to work, race, or just drive every day? Just remember the ups and downs from both vehicles when you make a decision on these two popular trucks.

The Perspective of College and High School

College is something I have always dreamt about. What will it be like, how will I adapt to it, what are the differences, but what are the similarities? Sure college has a lot to offer, there are many perks! However, there are so many things that not everyone knows the answers to. Not even some college students. It is scary to think about and can be stressful. College is different, but in the end there are so many things relative to what we are used to.
Beginning with high school. High school is a breeze compared to college, that is work wise. In high school you are forced to learn the material, and you don’t have a choice but to do the work. This is because your teachers want you to become adjusted to not getting things your own way. It will not be like that in the real world. Things will not always go as planned, and people won’t agree with you one-hundred percent of the time. You’ll have bosses, your parents, even your future children that won’t see things the way you do. No one is exactly like you, and no one thinks exactly the way you do. That’s what they are trying to prepare us for. Most of our teachers do not give us loads of work just out of spite. They don’t want to constantly be grading, they want freedom too. They only want what is best for us. They’re doing their job, teaching us.
In college your professors couldn't care less about how much work they give you. College is all they have. They don’t want what is best for you, in fact they want you to fail. Because when you fail, they succeed, and that’s all they’re in it for. Sarah Heath (The Worst Professors You’ll Have in College) says, “I had a bad explainer, busywork assigner, unfair grader, and rude professor all in one. I didn’t know what I was gonna do!” Just because you don’t understand the material doesn’t mean that they care, or have any interest in helping. They get more of your money. It is only a job for them, and they simply do not care. In college if you don’t have the desire to put in extra effort and time you might as well not be there. That’s what college is. The willingness to put yourself out there, work hard, and if you work hard enough, you will succeed. You have to study, prepare, and even teach yourself things sometimes. Professors stress me out. I’m not looking forward to how much work they assign, how hard everything is, or how rude their attitudes are going to be. However, it’s going to be better in the long run. They’re only preparing me for my last step, adulthood.
One of the biggest benefits of college is that everything is optional. If you don’t want to be there you can go take a nap somewhere, if you want to party instead of study go right ahead, and if you want to go shopping with your best friends do it! You just have to realize that it is all on you. You mom isn’t there to give assign curfews anymore. You have to manage your time wisely, or you’ll fall behind. It’s completely, one-hundred percent your fault if you fail that test, get bad grades, or flunk college. So, that’s what you have to understand. Just because you’re finally free doesn’t mean you need to start making stupid decisions, and messing your life up. That is why time management is so important! Ross Rosenberg (Time Management Tips for New College Students) came up with helpful tips for new college students, helping them with their time management. The two that stuck out most to me were to prioritize your to do list and remove distractions. Those were the most important, and when you think about it, the ones we struggle the most with. When you go to college you have to learn how to start getting your life together! That’s such a big part of college. Not gonna lie, I’m not the best at it right now. I do everything last minute, and sometimes I don’t even do it just because I don’t want to. But, when I get to college it’s gonna be a completely different story. College is business, and that’s one thing that I fear. Because in a way, my whole life is at stake. If I fail college, I fail life. You can’t get anywhere without an education these days to be honest, or at least anywhere big. So, college is extremely important to me. All of my family went to college so I have to too. It’s a big accomplishment, and it’ll make them proud. I’m going to college for my mom, my grandparents, my future husband, and my future kids. This isn’t about me. This is all for them.
That’s one thing I strongly dislike about high school. I have to do all of my assignments, pass every single test, and impress all of my teachers. It’s like a requirement, which isn’t a bad thing, but not necessarily a good thing either. In college it won’t be that way. Literally no one will care about you, and in a way I can’t wait for it. It’s going to be a big relief going into a completely different school system. Not having so much pressure, so many people breathing down my neck twenty-four seven, and no one caring about my decisions. I’ll finally get to be my own person.
I know I’ll miss high school. I’ll miss it like crazy. Not seeing all of the same people that I have seen every day since seventh grade. That is gonna kill me at first, I’m sure I’ll cry a lot. I’ll probably fall behind because of it, but it’ll be a nice change for once. I’ll have realized how easy I had it, how much joy was surrounded by me, and how much other people impacted me. It’s gonna be a really sad day when I graduate. I think about it every single day. Saying goodbye to all the people I love, and who have left a mark on me. But, I think I’ll like it too.
One thing that doesn’t excite me about the whole idea of college is that I am going to be broke all the time. I don’t know if I’m mentally, or emotionally ready for that. I’ve never even had a job before and that’ll change too. I’ll have to get a job to support myself. There’s food, clothes, books, gas, and all my wants that I’ll have to pay for. It’s gonna be hard, and something that I’m not used to. I’ll get the hang of it, though.
In high school I never had to worry about anything like that. My grandparents and mom always provided for me, which I’m super grateful for. I never had to worry about anything, they always took care of me. So, this’ll be strange at first. Not having anyone to rely on. Everything will be on me, and I’ll be on my own for the first time in my life, which will be very strange.
What makes me the saddest is that I’ll, most likely, be moving out into a dorm, which is exciting too! I’ll be with friends, surrounded by people who relate to me, and having my own space will be nice. But, this is going to be the hardest for me because my mom, and my sisters mean the absolute world to me. I do not want to leave them. When I have to say goodbye to them, it’s going to be extremely difficult. They’ve been there for me every single moment of my life, through thick and thin, and I don’t even want to think about moving away. It’ll take a lot of getting used to at first, but I’ll adjust to college life rather quickly I feel.
College excites me so much, though! I’m not sure what I’m going to do yet. I wanna join a sorority, but most likely I’ll just be in a dorm. Sororities seem like a lot of time, dedication, and work anyways. So, I don’t know if I can be in a sorority, and deal with college work at the same time. It seems like a lot to handle. Maybe I’ll get to try, we’ll see. I’m excited!
I am so eager for college, and excited to see what the future holds for me. College is full of opportunities, and maybe one of these days I’ll get the opportunity of a lifetime. Everyone always says how college is the best four years of your life. However, college is going to be a lot of hard work, but I am more than ready to put in some effort!

Anxiety vs. Depression
While many people do not know the main concepts on mental health and the disorders that come with it, anxiety and depression are two of the most critical and uneducated mental health disorders there are. Along with the many similarities there comes differences with such disorders. There are reasons they are caused and ways they can be prevented. Symptoms range from serious to minor and even symptoms that only show up for certain people. With so many people being diagnosed with these disorders we should not only educate ourselves but educate the ones with these disorders enough to the point where we understand the concepts that make up both mental illnesses.
For anyone with a disorder, the unknowing is traumatizing, the wandering of why such a disorder would possibly happen to you. Surprisingly though more than 40 million adults are affected by anxiety and 16.2 million are affected by depression. For those numbers to be so high, we should begin to go through the process of how these things happen. We should be more educated on what causes these traumatic disorders to so many people. ("Depression: Facts, Statistics, And You.") ("Facts & Statistics | Anxiety And Depression Association Of America, ADAA.")
With there not being any specific way to get anxiety, the causes and reasons are greater than any. Whether it is being traced through your family or starting up on its own, there is more than those reasons for it to happen. Anxiety can be, of course, brought on by if family members have had it before, and even if you experience traumatic events like abuse, loss of a loved one or chronic physical illness. With these not being every single way a person can go through anxiety, they are triggers that show up in most mental health patients.
As well with anxiety, there are ways to cause or trigger depression, some being relatively similar. Depression is a disorder in the brain that is triggered by genetic characteristics, changes in hormone levels, certain medical illnesses, stress, grief, or substance abuse. With these being bad enough on their own, if these triggers are combined, they can make the symptoms and recovery process harder and longer. But they still affect the human brain that leads up towards depression.
Along with disorders comes many long and short-lived symptoms. Some are more serious and others are minor. Symptoms are the hardest part of any disorder because of the not knowing how serious they could be or long they could last. The worrying and stressing of these symptoms doesn’t make them better with though. But even with both disorders being different, the symptoms they share are equal.
With every disorder or mental illness, there are symptoms. Some are more drown out and the person has to live with them longer, others notice the symptom and soon remove it from their life; either way, it affects the human brain and bodily functions just as much. According to (“Causes of Anxiety and Depression: Symptoms and Signs.”) the most common symptoms are the feeling of nervousness, restlessness, severe panic attacks, sweating, fatigue, rapid heart rate, chest pains, and difficulty concentrating. All these symptoms lead up to the main disorder of anxiety.
Just as any brain disorder, depression has its symptoms. Many symptoms can be shown differently in everyday life, such as feelings, behaviors, thoughts and even physical problems. As said in (““Depression: What Are Signs and Symptoms.””) these symptoms include loss of interest, guilt, hopelessness, trouble making decisions, concentrating, harmful thoughts, showing distance in people, substance abuse, tiredness, weight loss, and gain, and changes in sleep. Of course, every person lets the symptoms affect and hurt them differently.
Of course just like any other disorder people want to find ways to cope. Not all work for certain people but they are usually your only hope. Some may take a few days, others monthss and even some take years. Some may take money but either with how many people have these disorders, it shows just how much help they actually need. Finding help and a way to cope will better their lives and future.
Even with people who suffer from PTSD or have trouble with anything else in life, there are certain ways people like to cope. Some people try to ignore the whole problem entirely and slowly destroy themselves more, some like to self medicate themselves because of they don’t want to be wrong, but there healthy and stable ways to find help and cope with these disorders. Most the time disorders like these that deal with the same concepts in symptoms and causes, share similarities in help and coping mechanisms.
A main way people try to cope, according to (““How To Deal with Anxiety and Worry | THIS WAY UP.””) is to gain back control. Losing control over your emotions and feelings is a effect of anxiety and it really takes a toll on people. Within this process of gaining back control, it is key for people to relax, plan activities, exercise, and eliminate all negative thoughts. Of course with any disorde,r you can see a doctor. With anxiety being relatively linked to depression, you can see a doctor or get medication for both of these
Just like anxiety different therapies are available to help cope with depression. Such therapies, as said in (““How To Deal with Anxiety and Worry | THIS WAY UP.””) like CBT (Cognitive Behavioral Therapy) and ECT (Electroconvulsive therapy.) Both these therapies require a effort towards the activities required and to target your negative and biased thoughts, just like anxiety.
Just like every other disorder there similarities and differences; whether they be found in the ways to cope, how they happen or even symptoms. Every person with these disorders should know everything that comes with it, through the complicated stages to the simple ones. The obvious facts and statistics should show just how important these disorders are. According to ("Facts & Statistics | Anxiety And Depression Association Of America, ADAA.”") anxiety affects 40 million adults a year, everyone should know the basics of it, especially since only 36.9% of people diagnosed get treatment. With depression, more than 19 million people are affected by some type of depressive illness. These statistics are unbelievable and show a great deal about our country and world. With people dying around the world from diseases we can’t cure, it shows shame on the diseases, such as anxiety and depression, that have cures and have stable ways to find help. Overall there should not be a single human who can’t find help for these disorders. The signs show up and the help is there. We can’t let it slip through our fingers because these disorders seem “smaller” than others. The differences and similarities are there, they are eye opening and they should be making a difference in a way we see them. We have to stop belittling these disorders and make a difference and impact on the effects they have. Similarities and differences come small and big, but they are for sure important for everyone to know.

Which Type of Therapist Is Best For You?

Have you ever seen two things so much alike, but so different? Physical Therapy and Occupational Therapy are alike, but also different. They both make good money, and have many jobs to fulfill. While they are two completely different occupations, they are both used to heal a patient. Whether it be recovering from a knee replacement or a baby not knowing how to use its hand, one of these therapists can help someone recover from this. Even though these careers have their negatives, they both are great careers for anyone interested in helping people get through tough times.

An internet article states that Physical therapists are well educated health care professionals who can help patients reduce pain or restore mobility(Jason). They save thousands of patients a year from having to have a surgery, and they can reduce the need of long term prescriptions. They also help maintain mobility instead of losing it, during a point in someone's life.  A patient can go to a physical therapist to get a fitness plan. PT’s write plans out, using treatment techniques to promote the ability to move around, remove pain, and prevent disabilities.  Physical Therapist primarily work to heal or prevent injuries. Their goal is to get patients back to normal by exercise, massage, or other techniques. They also evaluate or diagnose movement dysfunctions and treat the tissues or structures.

Occupational Therapists help clients go throughout life after an injury. They teach you how to use something that you didn’t know how to do before. They improve independence and the ability to do daily activities. They primarily work on teaching muscles and other body parts how to work, instead of building up that muscle like a physical therapist.

These careers are alike, both offer rehabilitation care to recover from injuries or care for disabilities. Both Physical Therapist and Occupational Therapist educate their patients on how to prevent future injuries, how to heal, and how to help the way of life and movement. Both of these jobs are important to recover from injuries. They are also similar in their education, both require a bachelor degree, and three years of graduate school.

Both careers have an assistant job, a physical therapist assistant, and an occupational therapist assistant. Both of these jobs are two year programs(associate degree), and are offered at many colleges. These are for the people who want to do all the same things as their “big brother”, but have less ability, less entitlement, and less education, but they also make less money. The salary of a PTA (physical therapist assistant) is $52,000 a year, while an OTA (occupational therapist assistant) is $56,000.

An occupational therapist is someone who helps people from all ages, shapes, and sizes. They can help babies, to also helping eighty year old men. They help people engage in their daily life. From making it through a work day to rolling out of bed without hurting yourself, occupational therapist help do it all. They work in schools, to help kids with disabilities of behavior or physical behavior. They can also work in nursing homes, to help old men or old women deal with Alzheimer's, take a shower, or even recover from a stroke.

Occupational therapy is a masters degree. It takes about 7 years to obtain this degree. You graduate occupational therapy school and become a OTR, a registered occupational therapist. An internet article says they make about $90,000 a year, both nationally and in Arkansas (salary). There are many open jobs for OTRs, their outlook is 27%. The job consist of a lot more females than males, 90% to 10%. There are a lot more opportunities to become an occupational therapist than a physical therapist. There are 15 occupational therapy schools in Arkansas. Explore Health Careers website says “OTR’s working environment can vary as far as a hospital to a high school. They offer healthcare and community settings.” (Occupational Therapy) A typical occupational therapist works a 40 hour work week, but over 30% work part-time. While they do some of their job in an office, they typically stay on their feet many hours of the day,

To become a physical therapist, you need to get a bachelor's degree in health or exercise science, and then apply for doctorate school. It is a 7 year process to become a physical therapist, but the countless hours of school is worth it. After school, you will have to pass an exam. Once you pass this, you are a certified DPT, a doctor of physical therapy. They make about $85,000 nationally, and $80,000 in Arkansas. The job outlook of physical therapists is high, at 34%. Females outweigh males, at 64% to 36%.

There are few schools to get into for physical therapy, only 3 in Arkansas.  These are University of Central Arkansas, Arkansas State University, and Harding University. It is extremely difficult to get into these schools. You must be determined to get through all the tough classes. According to an internet website, University of Central Arkansas’ DPT program has a 95% graduation rate, and a 100% employment rate (University of Central Arkansas|UCA) This shows how serious students take the course.

Physical therapist have a work environment like occupational therapist. They work in clinics, hospitals, and schools. They can also be found working in nursing homes, helping old people get their physical abilities back. Physical therapist stay on their feet many hours of the day, but they also sit in an office too. They spend most of their day working with patients or filling out paperwork.

Physical Therapist and Occupational Therapist are both good fields to enter. They both have high job outlooks, and they pay pretty well. Although  they both require a significant amount of education, it is worth it in the end. It is relieving to see an impact in someone’s life, knowing that you had something to do with it.

Comparing Different Aspects of High School and College

It’s hard to make adjustments after you become accustomed to something like high school. We’ve been doing it nine months out of the year for six years. After high school, students either enter the workforce, or attend college and further their education. The students who go to college say it’s like a foreign culture to them (Nelson). It’s typically not the way students are used to attending school or learning. There are many differences and similarities between being a student in high school and being a student at an university.
In college the intensity of classes begin to increase opposed to high school. Not only academically but socially. In most high schools everyone knows everyone or majority of students do, but in college it’s not that way in most classes.
My cousin attends college at Arkansas State University and so does my sister. They started to school on a Monday and were getting to know how college classes worked and who was in their classes. Friday rolls around with their first week of classes ending and my cousin spots my sister in the same lecture class. She walked up to her and asked her where she had been at. My sister said that she had been in class each day, and neither of them had seen each other in this particular class until Friday. This is one example of how many students are in one class for someone to not recognize someone they know.
On average in a lecture class there is around one-hundred and fifty to three hundred students in the class at once (Wcccd.edu.). At the high school I attend, the largest class I have has twenty-six students in it. I know everyone in my classes by name, but in college there’s no way to do that with the number of students in most classes. Also, in these types of classes they don’t really talk to other classmates unless they need help with something. This can also come with its advantages though. Having so many different students in each class, gives many opportunities to make new friends. In high school we have attended K-12 with majority of the same classmates. By the time we get to high school we have the same six or seven close friends that we’ve always had. After high school some of us split apart and attend different colleges. College and high school are  similar because they bring friends together. Most friends that people have were made in high school or college. It brings people from all types of backgrounds and places together, which can lead to lifelong friendships. College gives us the opportunity to make new friendships. Social interaction is just one way that college is very different and similar to high school.
Academics is everything we’re going for, whether in college or in high school. One makes it much harder than the other though. According to the article “How Do College Freshmen View The Academic Differences Between High School And College”, students said that college classes are much harder and much more in depth compared to high school classes (How Do College Freshmen View The Academic Differences Between High School And College?). While in high school some students don’t have to study for any tests or exams they may have. Others, on the other hand really have to take the time and study hard. In college almost everyone needs to study diligently. Another student from the same article, said that in highschool when we were given reading to do at home no one really had to read it. In college you have to read everything you’re given (How Do College Freshmen View The Academic Differences Between High School And College?). You can’t be unfocused in college like in high school because you will miss something that you need to know.
Also, when we apply for college we have to get scholarships, loans, grants, or some way to pay for college. Majority of scholarships given out have a GPA requirement for students. That means passing classes is important because you’re held to a certain standard to be able to keep the scholarship. Studying needs to be done in college, not only because classes are harder than they were in high school, but you have to be able to pass classes with acceptable grades. Studying and class work aren’t the only thing harder about college classes.
Professors aren’t as helpful as teachers are in high school. Teachers tend to remind you of upcoming deadlines and assignments, whereas professors don’t. They don’t really care if students turn their work in on time, or if they’re passing their classes with good grades.  Most teachers on the other hand, do care about all of these things. They are trying to get students grades up, and they are also giving reminders throughout the week of upcoming deadlines. College needs to be more difficult for obvious reasons. People are getting prepared to be surgeons, doctors, accountants, teachers, or whatever they’re going to college to be. Therefore, these professors must expect a lot out of students. No one wants a surgeon who doesn’t know what utensil to use to open their heart with. We trust surgeons and doctors because they went through an intense amount of schooling to get their degree. There are reasons behind the work getting more difficult as you go. It’s even like that in high school, eleventh grade is harder than tenth grade and twelfth grade is harder than eleventh grade. It gets harder as we go along to better prepare us. Teachers allow students to drop in any time of the day for help. Professors have certain hours that they allow students to drop by, which means they must make their schedule work around the professors. College is more complicated in many aspects, but one that is for sure more difficult is academics.
High school is more simple than college in more ways than one. Athletics is a major one that is easier. Now, I’m not saying each game played in high school is an easy win because it’s not. The competition in high school is still difficult as in college but it increases in college.
When you play sports in high school coaches have to play with whoever tries out on the team, and there really are no academic benefits to playing sports in high school. College offers so much to student athletes. When students in high school are exceptional players, college coaches offer them scholarships to come to their university and play while their academics is getting paid for. That’s one positive to playing sports in college. Students who accept to go play at an university, shows they’re able to compete at the next level. Coaches in college get to pick who they want on their team, which means they get the best players from all around the world. Just like all sports teams, they’re competing against so many schools to see if they’re better than the next school. You have all the best players competing against each other making the level of competition go up by a lot. Competition isn’t the only difference that makes college sports divergent from high school. On the basketball court the three point line gets farther away from the goal, coaches get harder on their players, players get stronger, and all of these differ from high school.
In high school most programs don’t prepare athletes for college sports but others do. Even when coaches are preparing their athletes for college or not free time is there. High school sports aren’t as consuming as college sports. In college free time is limited from all the training, practicing, and team building that goes into it. According to Jaimie Duffek, head recruiting softball coach at Drake University,  she says “When you’re a freshman in college, you’re training on the same program as 21 and 22-year-olds and they push you. Every practice is like an All-Star game.” (Jaimie Duffek). Athletics change majorly from high school to college. People don’t realize all the rules that change for every sport along with the intensity. The whole environment changes from high school sports to the next level of college sports. College athletics can make the enjoyment of the sport increase because the competition is more intense.
Enjoy the simplicity that high school offers because everything seems to get  harder once students attend college. The social aspects of college increase with more people and the extra  opportunities to interact with new people. Athletes experience greater competition than they did in high school sports. Academics get harder and require more studying than teachers required/expected in high school. In many ways things grow more difficult in college, but there are many pros to college that are cons in high school and vice versa. Both college and high school have their very own differences and similarities. Each are times in our lives that we will never get back, so enjoy everything that each have to offer to their students.
