Beth 08 - Surgery

As some of you may already be aware, I had surgery on my knee yesterday. Honestly, the whole ordeal was terrifying. I cried so much when they gave me the anesthetic because that's just how my body responds to it. Anyway, they gave me a dose of versed which made all of my muscles relax and numbed my legs before doing some sort of nerve block on my knee which would prevent me from feeling any sensation in my leg for 12-24 hours. My parents had to leave the room for this part, and I was told I probably wouldn't remember them doing it. Surprise! I remember. I also remember being taken down to the operation room, still crying from the anesthesia. My nurses thought I was scared or in pain one so they started dancing and singing to distract me. The OR was soooo cold and I couldn't stop shaking. They had to strap me down and set up a system of blankets that would trap hot air in with me so I wouldn't shake so badly. The last thing I remember was an oxygen mask being placed over my mouth and nose before I went to sleep.
When I woke up the first time the back of my knee felt like it was on fire. They gave me another dose of versed and I was out again. I woke up for the second and final time and was able to get dressed and they put me on a wheelchair and waited for my dad to bring the truck around. I have never felt so physically weak and powerless in my life. When I got home I mostly just rested on the couch. I went to bed around midnight after taking more medicine.
I woke up this morning with a very sore knee that burned when I stood up. I'm currently using a CPM machine which is supposed to move my leg for me so it doesn't lock up and get stiff. Everyone told me I would enjoy it, but it hurts a lot.
Anyhow, for those who have been keeping up, the surgery apparently went well. I should be all good in about six months. See y'all in the next post.

  1. I remember when my older sister had her knee surgery. She had to have surgery right in the middle of football season, so she was not able to finish out the season on the dance team. I wasn’t allowed to go to her surgery because I had to be at school, but my mom told me that she cried a lot too with the anesthesia. My aunt, on the other hand, got really mean on the anesthesia. She didn’t want anyone around her or talking to her. But I’m glad everything went well! I hope you have a quick recovery!
