Comparison/Contrast Essay - Grace Anne Puckett

Grace Anne Puckett

Are Your Friends Actually Your Enemies?

Friends are those people you meet out of everyone in the world, and want to know more about them. They’re someone you invest time, effort, love, and you expect the same back. You don’t see the people for who they actually are sometimes. Most friends wouldn’t go trash your name, or bring you down. Matter of fact I think that is what most people would call their enemy. An enemy is someone who you may have known or never really got to know. It’s when they judge you, don’t care about you, and love to talk bad about you. An enemy is basically a type of fake friend. Unfortunately many people have less so called “friends” and more enemies that they may be blind to. Everyone thinks the world of their friends since they wouldn’t do anything to hurt you, but what if your enemies are more trustworthy than the friendships you have?
What if I told you most of the people you call your friends weren’t the true definition of friends, and that there are ways to deal with them. It means to have a bond, to know about each other, and have a mutual affection. True friendship according to Robert Cialdini the author of Influence: the Power of Persuasion says, that we are friends with people who are like us. With people who have things in common with us and push us to be a better person (“How to Spot Friends, Enemies, Frenemies and Bullies”). This means those friends that aren’t interested in you aren’t your friend. Everyone knows those kinds of people. Many would call them fake. Fake friends are the most common people you’ll run into. From the time you are a kid in school, all the way into adulthood in the real world, you will encounter these people all your life.
Fake friends can take a toll on not only how you act, but how you accept others into your life. If you’re surrounded by people that aren’t true, you’re prone to let even more damaging relationships come into your life. If you have these types of friends you can pick up their habits and become something you don’t want to. Having these unnecessary and forced relations can bring you down too. They can make you question yourself on things you shouldn’t have to doubt. Over all it’s emotionally draining to have these people.
Eventually these so called friends will fade in and out. With that being said there are usually two things that take place. You realize that these “friends” aren’t the people you thought they were, and you are the one to decide to slowly or completely cut ties with them. This is much easier than the second way. This way is when the people you thought were your friends with cut ties with you, for no apparent reason. It’s one day you’re hanging out thinking everything is okay. Then you can’t even get a response or the simple things like talking become awkward because they’re being shady. This can make you question what you did wrong, or was it something you said. When in reality it wasn’t your fault. So next time you’re hanging out with your group of “friends” check off some of these traits and really ask yourself if they’re your friend.
Enemies are something no one wants have, usually do, and you probably have more than you think. The word enemy is thrown around and given many dramatic meanings. The word really means to want cause harm to someone. This is not the enemy I’m discussing. A more used teenage aimed term for an enemy is when someone excludes you from something, trashes your name, or likes to be mean or disrespectful to another person. On Psychology Today they talk about the enemy that is a fake friend. This fake friend might be mature, have boundaries they don’t cross when talking about us, and through it all may carry respect for us through their dislikes about us (“How to Spot Friends, Enemies, Frenemies and Bullies”).  Many try to avoid these people at all cost.
Enemies make you feel bad about yourself, or makes you want to inflict the same onto them. Which this makes you no better than them. It can change how you act and feel. It’s draining, tiring, unnecessary, and hurtful. The best option to use when you have someone in your life like that is to block off the interactions and live your life accordingly. Since enemy can mean several different things, the best way to handle them is to just separate yourself from whoever this “enemy” may be.
There is a very strong relationship between the meaning of fake friends and enemies. However there’s still a variation between the two. Fake friendships can take place behind closed doors. It can happen for the sole purpose of you not finding out what was said, or what you wasn’t invited to. Enemies do the complete opposite they want you to know they hope you find out. Enemies can tend to be aimed to specifically hurt you more. Sometimes that friend doesn’t intentionally do a bad thing on purpose. Which can make it somewhat confusing on if that friend is actually fake.
Fake friends also tend to talk bad when you’re not around, but when they see you they’re nice as they can and hope you don’t find out. This is opposite of what an enemy can do, they don’t care if they hurt your feelings, and more than likely they're not nice to your face. They’re not nice to your face because they don’t want to be around you period. Information gets spread fast no matter where or how old you are. So when word gets around that your friend was talking bad about you, you might not believe it at first. Or hope it’s not true. An enemy talking about you seems unlikely and you would more than likely believe it as soon as you get the news.
Fake friend relationships make you feel a sense of responsibility that you have to still be nice to that person. You can feel this way since you used to be close that’s where that responsibility comes in. If you have an enemy you don’t really feel the need to accept the things they do or be nice to them even after what they’ve done. There’s a mentality of they deserve what they have coming. However that fake friend you have you used to be close and thought they were real. So you don’t want to just completely leave them in the background. Even though all together it seems that fake friends and enemies are the same thing they have different way of actions and feelings.
Enemies and fake friends have been mixed into the same group for so long that there is a name for both that combines them together. Frenemies. Frenemy is someone who is nice to you even though they could really care less, and don’t really want to be friends. A article Psychologist Irene S. Levine was in talks about how it’s like a wolf hiding in a sheep’s costume, you never know which one you’ll get or be around (Wolff, Carina). These two are both not needed in anyone's life. There should be no tolerance or accepting people like that.
Backstabbing is a way to refer to these frenemies. This is just when they do bad things behind you, or betray you in some way. Again both love to talk about you, which is the biggest similarity between the two. They don’t like to see you doing good. Especially when you’re doing it without them. Cutting ties with both of these relationships are also the best way to deal with them. They drag you down and both have a bad influence on you. They can basically rub off on you and change the person you are. Also you would think that a friend would stand up for you and defend you. While a fake friend would just sit there and not care that’s the same thing an enemy would do. That’s why they are put together like that. While the fake friendship fades and they slowly start to care less about you. Having enemies is just a faster way of this process.
Thinking that your fake friend is trustworthy and you can count on them is a mistake. It’s about as equivalent as trusting an enemy. At the end of the day you would not choose to trust an enemy, so why would you choose to trust someone who acts the same way. It’s your decision, however it is harder to understand and accept that this is true. That’s why people have more fake friends than “enemies.” It’s also all about the perspective you look at the situation from. If you are looking at it after the fact that you’ve already gone through the process of cutting out these fake friends. Then it’s easier to see and point out these flaws. This makes it easier to understand the differences and similarities on how a fake friend is also an enemy. If you are just now realizing that these qualities of friendship aren’t how you and your so called friends are it can be hard to accept. At the end of the article “9 Ways To Know If You Have Enemies Disguised As Friends” it says how friendship is still important, and to disregard those friends who aren’t right for you (Koger, Kendra). You might get this feeling it’s not true however in the end it’s best to realize these people aren’t good for you an act on it. This is why it’s also best to trust neither or see both just as bad.

The Better Season: Summer or Winter
Summer and winter are two completely different seasons, however, they each have their own advantages and disadvantages. Some advantages are better than others and some disadvantages are worse than others. Both seasons can be great at times, both seasons can be bad at times. Many people typically prefer one season over the other. However, when it comes down to it, summer is better than winter.
There are many different elements that factor into why summer is better than winter. Those elements are the weather, the things to do in each season, the different holidays, the length of each season, the length of the days, and the way each season affects your mood. Some of these point to summer being better, and other point to winter. However, more of these point towards summer being the better season.
The weather plays a huge role in why summer is better than winter. In the summer, the weather is warmer and it feels nice outside. Although there is more rain, the days are usually clear and pretty. The downsides to the summer weather would be there are more tornadoes and it can get really hot outside. However, the really hot days can be nice as well. In the winter, it gets a lot colder. There is more snow and ice that just adds on top of the coldness. Also, it gets cloudy and gloomy looking outside which can really dampen your mood. There aren’t really any upsides to winter weather besides the pretty snow and being able to go outside and play in the snow. Overall, summer weather is definitely better than winter weather.
There are many more things to do in the summer rather than in the winter. In the summer, if it gets really hot outside, you can always get in a pool to cool you off. Going to a water park is also an option when it gets too hot in the summer. Swimming is one of the best activities in the summer. You can also go on more vacations in the summer. In the summer you can go to places like the beach,  the lake, or an amusement park. Another big upside to summer is we get out of school. There are also some fun things to do in the winter as well. Such as playing in the snow. Going sledding is something that everyone typically enjoys doing whenever it has snowed. Another upside to winter is spending time with family at Christmas. There are more things to do in the summer, but winter is not so bad.
There are more celebrated holidays in the winter time than there are in the summer. Christmas time comes in the winter. This is definitely one of the best holidays and the most celebrated. There is also New Years Eve and New Years Day. Everyone around the world celebrates these holidays with huge celebrations every year. There is also Hanukkah and Kwanzaa for those who celebrate them. In the summer, there is really only one major holiday that all Americans celebrate, the Fourth of July. This is also a really fun holiday because everyone gets together and celebrates in their own way. There are also other holidays that aren’t celebrated as much, like Memorial Day and Labor day. In the winter, we celebrate more holidays than we do in the summer. That is what makes winter better when it comes to holidays.
There is not a huge difference in the length of the seasons, but, summer is five days longer than winter. This is not much of a difference at all but it just goes to show another reason of why summer is better. Summer is 94 days long and winter is about 89 days long (“NPR Choice Page”).  Having summer weather longer than winter weather is a big plus. Being able to do summer activities longer than winter is a big plus as well. Because summer is the better season, it is good that summer lasts longer than winter.
The length of the days in each season differ as well. In the summer, the days are longer and in the winter, the days are shorter. This means that in the summer, you can stay outside longer and enjoy the nice weather without it getting dark early. In the winter however, it’ll get dark earlier and you can’t really go outside because it’s too cold. Especially after dark. Having longer days means that there is more time to do things before it gets too dark outside. In the winter when the daytime is shorter, it really makes you feel more tired and not want to do anything at all because it’s dark outside. This is another reason as to why summer is better than winter.
The changing of the different seasons can often trigger a change in people’s moods. When the seasons change into winter, it can often trigger a form of depression called Seasonal Affective Disorder (SAD). It can cause you to have loss of energy, sleeping too much, lack of interest in things you once enjoyed, and craving for sweet and starchy food. This mostly occurs in the winter months. This is because the days are shorter in the winter and longer in the summer (“Healthlines: Seasons Change, Moods Change | NIH Medlineplus The Magazine."). As we go into the summer and the days get longer, people’s moods tend to be uplifted. The summer makes many people feel better. This is because of the longer days and the more amounts of sunlight rather than cloudy and gloomy days. In the summer, there is more daylight and more daytime which tends to make people feel happier.
Most people seem to be happier in the summer and sadder in the winter. All of the different elements that factor into why summer is better than winter come back to how it affects your mood. In the summer you can go out and do many other things that you couldn’t do in the winter time. Also in the summertime, the weather is better and there are more sunshine days than there are cloudy ones. There are more celebrated holidays in the winter, but summer still outweighs winter with everything else. The summer season lasts longer than the winter season, which is good because summer is the better season of the two. In the summer, the days are longer than they are in the winter. This allows for more time to do things in a day than you can in the winter. You can also be more active in the summer than the winter. In the summer you can go out and run, swim, or even just go play basketball or something outside.

Overall, summer is better than winter. Even though winter has more celebrated holidays, summer is better in everything else. Whether it be things to do or even just the weather, summer is better. Summer also uplifts almost everybody's moods and makes everyone happier. Others may think differently about summer being better than winter. Some may think that winter is better than summer, however, summer is ultimately the better season.

How Different Can American And Korean Pop Artists Be?
With Korean Pop group BTS rising in fame in America and Billboard, many are probably wondering this same question: “What’s so different about Korean artists than American artists?” Honestly, they each have their strengths and their weaknesses, but that’s just what makes them both so interesting. The way Korean artists are made and go through their music careers seem pretty different from the way American artists do.
Korean artists have to learn many skills to be an idol. Many artists are either picked-up off the street for their looks or talents, or auditioned for the position. They have to go through many years as a trainee, some even up to ten like TWICE’s Jihyo, before they can debut (“These Are The Main Differences Between K-Pop And American Pop”). During these years, they learn to sing, some to rap, dance, host for many radio and TV shows --what they call “MC-ing”--, have variety show expertise, and acting. They also need to learn different languages that will be helpful for them, as many artists will release songs in Japanese and Korean, and mostly have English lyrics in many of their songs. Many even know or are fluent in English, like BTS’s RM and GOT7’s Mark and Jackson. GOT7 even released their song “Lullaby” in four different languages: Korean, Mandarin, Spanish, and English.
Unlike many Korean artists, most American artists are picked because of their natural talents and don’t go through much, if any, training at all. If they do go through any training, it was usually on their own time and money, which is different from Korean artists, whose training is paid for by their companies (“These Are The Main Differences Between K-Pop And American Pop”). Many artists are chosen from shows like The Voice, X-Factor, or America’s Got Talent. They also don’t sing many different languages, most recently just English and Spanish.
Many Korean artist will have what we call “bands,” but are called groups in South Korea. These groups can consist of two to thirteen members. Many groups have about six to nine, and are mostly one gender. But there are some co-gender groups, like KARD who has four members, two boys and two girls. Some groups can even have more than thirteen, like NCT 2018, who has eighteen members who are divided into NCT Dream, NCT 127, and NCT U, with some of them being in all or just one subdivision. Or like Produce 101, who has one-hundred and one members who are all trainees. Like NCT, many groups’ companies can split them up into sub-groups for more publicity.
There is also designated sections that the members of the groups are put into. All groups have what they call a “leader” of the group. Most of the time this is someone who is responsible and deemed the “spokesperson” of the group, and they don’t have to be the oldest. They also have what they call a “hyung line” and a “maknae line”, hyung meaning oldest and maknae meaning youngest. For example, in BTS, there is the hyung line including Jin, the oldest, Suga, RM, the leader, and J-hope. In the maknae line is Jimin, V, and Jungkook, who is the maknae. Korean companies also focus a lot on appearances, so many groups will have a “visual” or multiple in a group.
Many groups also have international members. Like GOT7’s Jackson, who is Chinese, Mark, who is from America, and BamBam, who is from Thailand. Companies do this to have more publicity and get more attention internationally.
There seem to be more solo artists in American Pop than bands or groups. But there are still American bands like One Direction, Fifth Harmony, and new ones like Why Don’t We. But these bands don’t really put an emphasis on a leader or certain positions of the members in these groups as Korean artists do. Older groups like NSYNC, Backstreet Boys, and artists like Paula Abdul had some choreographed dances, but the groups and solo artists nowadays don’t seem to put much of an emphasis on choreographed dances as Korean artists do, as they seem to focus more on the singing aspect. Then again, this might be changing with the American group PRETTYMUCH releasing a dance video to their song “Would You Mind.”
Concerts of Korean artist are very similar to those of American artists, besides one difference. Most, if not all, have a choreography for almost all of their songs that they train tiredly to learn. They work until they have the moves down, are practically in-sync with each other if in a group, for hours so that their concerts can be amazing for their fans. They learn to sing, and/or rap, while doing these hard dance moves for an entire song. They also like to play fun games for their fans to watch or join in if they’re lucky.
In Korea, they also have what they call fan-meetings. Fan-meetings are where fans get to meet their favorite artists. The artist or members are usually on a stage with a table where they can sit down, and there is usually no more than a hundred to a hundred and fifty fans. To get invited, you have to have purchased a lot of merchandise, like twenty CDs and such. The artists sometimes have games set-up and maybe perform and sing some songs. Then they start the fan signing. Fan signing is where the members sit behind the table and the fans line up with things for them to sign and give to them as gifts. You’re given about a couple minutes to have a conversation with them and to even high-five them or hold their hand.
Another thing that seems to be different in American artists and Korean artists, according to the article “What Are The Differences Between K-Pop and Western Pop,” is that American artists have a longer lifespan than Korean. Artists like Madonna, who is nearly sixty years old, have been making and singing music for a long time now, which is unheard of in Korean pop because they usually only stay popular while they are young and good-looking, which is why they learn so many skills (“These Are The Main Differences Between K-Pop And American Pop”).
Many Korean groups don’t want to start scandals, and usually don’t have time for relationships as they spend so much time training and performing for their fans. Many even have strict “no dating” policies made by their companies.
Also unlike Koran artists, it seems that American artists can decide to date whoever they want, if they want to. There is not any strict no-dating policies as there seem to be in Korea, as American companies let their artists be more free and do their own thing. There also seems, mostly in my opinion because this might not be true, more drug abuse and scandals in American artists, as Korean companies keep a tight leash on their artists.
While Korean artists do seem very different from American artists, it is to be expected because of the cultural differences. But this doesn’t seem to stop Americans from listening to their music and vice versa. And while they may seem vastly different, I believe they all have one major thing in common: they want their fans to listen and enjoy their music.

Football vs. Rugby
Each country has certain sports that are extremely popular to watch and play. America is known for having some of the best sports teams, including baseball, football, basketball, ice hockey, soccer, and softball (“Sports in the United States.”). However, there are sports that are played in other countries that are very similar to America’s sports. Many football fans don’t realize that rugby is very similar to one of America’s favorite sports.
Similarities between the two sports vary in measures, For example, a football field is measured at 100 yards, and a rugby field is measured at 100 meters. The fields are also both marked with numbers that indicate 10 yards or meters. The point scale is also similar between the two. In football, touchdowns are counted as six points, and a touchdown or “try” in rugby is counted as five (“Rugby Union Bonus Points System.”). However, both sports have a chance to score more points after an initial touchdown known as a field goal. In football and rugby, field goals are counted as three points each. Measures between the two sports are fairly similar (Shireley).
The concept of these sports are also very similar. Just like in football, rugby players are attempting to pass or run the ball down the field to score. Once the players get down the field, they score a touchdown or “try” to earn their team points. The team with the most points at the end of the game is the winner of the match. Both teams have a set number of certain things that they must do while in possession of the ball before it is turned over. American football has four chances to go ten yards that are known as downs. Rugby has a rule similar to this called the six-tackle rule; this rule states that after a team has been tackled six times, the possession of the ball is turned over to the other team. Concepts for these sports reflect each other in different ways (“Comparison of American Football and Rugby League.”).
There are multiple ways that the possession can be changed other than running out of downs or the six-tackle rule. Interceptions are when a player from a team attempts to pass the ball and the opposing team catches it instead. Therefore, interceptions are a way to reverse the possession in both games. Both sports also have the opportunity to score more points by scoring a field goal; if the offensive team misses, the goal then the defensive team has automatic possession of the ball. As you can see, there are many similarities between rugby and football when it comes to possession changes (“Comparison of American Football and Rugby League.”) .
Both sports are considered physical and intense, but they are also popular. A player must have speed, power, and endurance to participate in the two. There is a numerous amount of people who decide to play either football or rugby. The ball for the two sports are both a prolate spheroid that is thrown or kicked to score points. Countries even have their own league for these sports, and they also have players who are famous because of their ability to play. In England, thousands of people play rugby while even more thousands of people enjoy watching it. In America it’s one of the most popular things to play or watch. Fans spend hundreds of dollars to watch from the sidelines, and others get together to throw huge parties to watch two rivals go head to head on the gridiron. The popularity of these sports in different countries is astounding (“Comparison of American Football and Rugby League.”).
Along with similarities comes differences. There are a couple differences between American football and rugby. Differences range from the number of players to the way a touchdown or try is scored.
A big difference between football and rugby is the number of players and their positions. In American football, there are 11 players that are on the field at once. There is an offense and a defense; there are also typically 11 different players for each. However, there are some players that play both. In rugby, there are 15 players on the field. If an athlete gets injured on the rugby field, the team must play short-handed. Therefore, a team is consisted of the amount of players allowed on the field (“Rugby.”). The positions in rugby are more along the lines of American soccer than American football.
Although there are similarities when it comes to advancing the ball, there are also a few differences. In football, each player has a specific position that keeps the person from doing certain actions. In rugby, the positions make it to where any player can kick, tackle, run, and pass. For example, the quarterback in football is the main person to pass, and there is a designated kicker to punt and score field goals. Passing in football and rugby differ greatly. It is considered to be illegal to pass forwards in rugby. The player must get the ball down the field by sideways passes. Football allows forwards, sideways, and backwards (lateral) passes. Both sports have an action, known as rushing, that is used to score. Rushing is simply running the ball without getting tackled to score (“Comparison of American Football and Rugby League.”).
Tackling is a big part of both of these sports. Football players have a set of pads and helmets that are required in every game. Safety gear worn by football players include a mouth guard, helmet, neck collar, {thigh, knee, shoulder, and hip} pads, cleats, and gloves (JulieD). Meanwhile, rugby players typically only wear cleats and a mouth guard. Most forwards in rugby wear a scrum cap to protect their ears and sides of their face while playing (Shireley). Tackling is the primary way to stop rushing and the gaining of yards (“Rugby.”). It is popular in rugby to pass out of a tackle to keep the possession from switching and to help keep the ball alive. Passing out of a tackle is more difficult in football. A block is when a player uses their body to block a pass or a kick. Blocks are permitted in football, but they are illegal in rugby. There are some restrictions in football, but they are still allowed. However, players that are not in possession of the ball can interfere with each other. Rugby has different rules when it comes to tackling and blocking than football does.
The team that scores the most points is the winner of the game. The primary way to score in both sports is to get the ball to the designated end of the field. Football players are only expected to run into the end zone of a football field for it to count. Rugby players must set the ball on the ground behind the goal line for it to count as a try. Following that action, players get an opportunity to score more points to help them stay ahead (“Rugby.”). Football has two common actions: a field goal or two point conversion. There is a designated kicker that kicks the ball through the goalposts. Two points conversions are scored when basically scoring another touchdown except the offensive line starts on the goal line. Rugby has similar rules to this; however, the ball is drop kicked by the designated kicker through the goalposts.
Every country has their own specific sports that are popular to play and watch. Some are more popular than others.  However, there are sports that are played in other countries that are closely similar to another country’s sports. Many football fans don’t realize that rugby is very similar to one of America’s favorite sports. Although there are differences, there are also many things that make the two similar.

Dating Habits in South Korea vs. America

South Korea and America are on two different sides of the world; separated by over 6,600 miles of straight ocean. Two completely different societies, cultures, beliefs, governments, traditions, dating habits, and the list goes on. However, the dating habits between them aren’t as different as some people may think. They do have some similarities between them; however, there are also some interesting differences that some people might not think about.
One of the several differences between the two is that Korean couples normally look for compatibility. Of course, the appearance matters too, but compatibility is super important. Paige Haverstock, a blogger who lives in South Korea, tells of several differences between the two. She starts by saying that beauty and appearance is the most important factor when looking for a boyfriend or girlfriend. She also tells that, for the women, the size of the guy’s wallet is also an important factor. She then states that Korean people don’t often set themselves up with other people. Normally, they have their friends or family set them up on a blind date. Another difference, according to her, is that the person who plays the dominant role in the relationship is also different. In America, it is normal for the male to try and impress the female at first. However, after a certain amount of time, this changes. Both the female and male try to equally impress each other throughout their relationship. In Korea, the male is the dominant one of the relationship. He is the one who will go out of his way to keep his woman happy. He will often carry his woman’s purse, give lots of gifts, shower her with compliments, etc. The last difference she points out is that when a relationship gets serious and the couple starts really caring for one another, they often take their boyfriend/girlfriend home to meet the family. Well, that is how most American couples do it anyways. However, it is totally different for Korean couples. Korean couples rarely ever take their partner home to meet the family unless they intend to marry that person shortly after (Haverstock, Paige).
Another difference is provided by 10 Magazine Korea, claiming that most Korean couples don’t often spend a lot of time with each other. Koreans are well known for having busy and tight schedules, so they don’t normally have a lot of time to spend with their significant other ("8 Cultural Differences To Expect When Dating In Korea | 10 Magazine Korea.").
A few more of the several differences are provided by an article in Soompi, a popular international website that covers Korean culture, music, etc. The article goes to inform people that most Koreans don’t date strangers. The majority of them don’t go online, like most Americans often do, to find a possible future boyfriend or girlfriend; instead, they focus on mutual friends or people in their friend group. They also provide that Korean couples are known for going all out and matching, sometimes from head to toe, with their significant other. They wear matching hats, shirts, pants, shoes, accessories, you name it. “#Couplegoals” is what some call it. But, Korean couples do this in an attempt to show everyone that they are in a relationship together. Another reason they do this to show their partner that they are serious and are committed to the relationship. Now, while this is similar to couples in America, Koreans have taken it a few steps further. The article then goes to talk about how several restaurants have created menus specifically for couples. It also states that at major attractions and events, there are often romantic deals created for couples and at movie theaters, private loveseats are offered to help make the date more intimate. The article also states that excessive amounts of PDA is not common in Korea. It is often looked down upon when a couple shows a lot of PDA. Holding hands, a small peck on the cheek or lips, and hugging is okay; however, you won’t find a couple making out or touching inappropriately in public. Nobody wants to see that, and ajummas (older Korean women, also known as grandmas) are not shy to say something about it. Another difference provided is that Korean couples have anniversaries more often than American couples do. It is very common to have an anniversary every year that an American couple is together. However, Korean couples celebrate their anniversaries all of the time. They might have every 100th day anniversaries, 200th day anniversaries, or an anniversary every couple of weeks ("7 Things You Should Know About Dating In Korea." Soompi).
The last difference they provide is that Korean couples are known to text each other constantly. Instead of texting once or twice a day, like most American couples do, they text non-stop to keep their partner updated about their day and vice versa. This is so popular that a business in Seoul, South Korea, began to set up booths where people can buy a brand new, fully charged battery for only a few dollars in case their battery dies. They can also call and have a brand new battery delivered to their significant other, family member, or friend if their battery dies ("7 Things You Should Know About Dating In Korea." Soompi).
According to the blog "The Rules Of Dating: Korean Style", Koreans, more particularly Korean females, are very “coy”. The more innocent a girl seems, the more attracted the guys are to her. “Sexual advertisement” is not as popular in Korea. Koreans keep their private business to themselves. That same blog also tells us that most Koreans, especially the younger generations, will admit that they had never had a serious relationship until after high school. It is very popular for teenage Koreans to stay focused on their school work, unlike most of the American teenagers today. For us, we start “dating” at a ridiculously young age and by the time we have graduated high school, we’ve already gotten our hearts “broken” a trillion times and we label all guys as jerks or worse. However, if you were to talk to a female in college about guys, they’d sound like a love struck 16-year old. And because of this, their standards are often unbelievably high, which is not good for the poor college guys who are just learning about dating. ("The Rules Of Dating: Korean Style.")
Now, while there are some interesting differences between our dating habits, there are also some similarities. For instance, in both South Korea and America, the man pays for the first date and the girl normally waits for the guy to call after the date. Haverstock not only pointed out differences, as stated earlier in the essay, but she also pointed out a similarity between the two. She pointed out that blind dates are also common in Korea as well as they are here (Haverstock, Paige). More similarities are pointed out by the blog, “The Rules Of Dating: Korean Style".  That blog inferred that, like most Americans today, Koreans don’t always date just to find a husband or wife right away. South Koreans don’t normally get married until their late twenties, early thirties. So, before that, they are known for dating just for fun. However, there is a difference in someone they date and someone they marry. The blog also states that, while Korean men may date a woman who is poor or can’t cook, most would never take her home to meet the parents or even think about making the relationship official by tying the knot ("The Rules Of Dating: Korean Style.").
Although South Korea and America are two completely different countries with different cultures, there are some similarities between them, especially when it comes to dating. However, even though there are some similarities in Korean dating habits, there are more differences that matter and make the experience different, especially if someone isn’t used to it.

High School and College Education

Every high school student believes that the change in education from high school to college is very similar. They think that everything will stay the same; however, it doesn’t stay the same. Some things that stay the same are classrooms and supplies, but the teachers, workload, and test all change. Education in high school is similar to an education in college, but they are different at the same time.
Most colleges are very different from high schools. The biggest difference is the teachers and professors. A majority of the time, high school teachers remind students about due dates, make- up work, and even work that they didn’t finish. So, as students we are very blessed to have them remind us about everything. The only problem is that in college it is the complete opposite. The professors usually don’t remind students of what work is due. According to an article from Live science, Professors do not track down students to get their missing work or to remind them to finish assignments (“How Is College Different from High School” SMU). Which, is exactly what should be expected since they are basically an adult. However, students don’t realize it, and they expect their college professors to do exactly what teachers in high school do. This leads to the students struggling throughout their first semester of school; however, that isn’t their only problem.
The biggest problem for students going to college is the learning environment. It is a huge change for the students that were babied. In high school, if a student missed a day the teachers would give the student the notes or they would give that student a copy of someone else's. Although it was helpful and appreciated, they were only causing us to become more handicapped. As students, we get so use to being babied and relying on the teachers to help us get caught up, when we go to college we don’t have that.  The article “How College Is Different from High School” said that college professors expect their students to get the notes from a classmate and not come to them. That same article also said that professors expect students to take their own notes, they do not post the slideshow or notes that they took themselves for students to use to study (“How College Is Different from High School”). This causes a problem for the students because they get use to teachers giving them the notes to study instead of them having to listen and decide what is important for their notes and what isn’t. The learning environment changes drastically, and that causes some dilemmas for shy people.
Students that are shy will have to overcome that issue. In college, students are expected to participate in discussions and voice their opinions. According to Livescience, shyness is a problem for college students, because some college professors will grade students on their participation in class and how well the students can present or voice their opinions (“How College Is Different from High School”). This is a hard transition for shy students because majority of high schools allow students to be shy. They do not force them to present, talk in front of the class, or answer questions out loud. At my high school, if the teachers knew a certain student didn’t like talking in front of everyone they looked over that student when asking questions or they would simply skip that student. This was a complete blessing for students that were shy and didn’t want to talk; however, it was hurting them. They need to develop those skills to be able to participate and talk in college, but they never learned the skills. So, now they are a college freshman trying to figure out how to overcome their shyness. This is a minor setback for college students, and trust me they have bigger issues they need to focus on.
One of the bigger issues they have to focus on is the difficult of assignments. The difficulty of assignments is a huge difference. In high school, most teachers give their students very little homework, and they give students work that can be completed within class period. According to an article published by SMU, high school teachers discuss the assignments or at least the information needed to complete the assignment in class (“How Is College Different from High School” SMU). Also, the information in high school is easy to understand, usually students do not have to study a whole lot to be able to pass a test. However, everything changes when they go to college. The same article stated that college professors will usually give their students a large amount of assignments at once and they very rarely discuss them (“How Is College Difference from High School” SMU). They might discuss the information needed to complete it, but they will not come out and say the answer to the question. They want their students to figure out the answer on their own, and usually professors don’t have enough time in class to explain every assignment and still have time to teach the students the new information. Also, most students have to study in college, they do not understand the information the first time they see it. The information isn’t anywhere close to being as easy as high school, if the students don’t study, they will fail the test and they may even fail the class. College students struggle a lot throughout their freshman year, and the difficulty of assignments is one reason; however, there are more.
The difference of grading between high school and college is another reason high school students struggle their first year of college. An article from SMU stated that the main issue is that test and papers have a higher percentage of their grade in college (“How Is College Different from High School” SMU). Instead of everything being at the same level and averaging together, the test, homework, and assignments will have their own special section and their grade will be those sections being averaged together. So, all of their test will be averaged together and that average will be added to find the students overall grade. That article also stated that everything is not graded in college (“How Is College Different from High School” SMU). In high school, almost everything that is assigned is worth a grade, but that isn’t how it works in college. The professors might give out a reading quiz that students are expected to take, but the grade will not be put into the grade book. So, your work may be calculated in your grade or it may not be.However, there are bigger problems that students face when going into college.
The difference in test is probably the biggest change that students hate. In high school, most students take a huge amount of test. They will usually take a test for each section or at least for each chapter. That is not how it works in college. In “How Is College Different from High School”, it said that college students take a very little test over large amounts of information (“How Is College Different from High School” SMU). If a student misses one of the test, they are expected to make it up on their own time. They are also expected to inform their professor that they will be gone. In that same article, it said that if the professor isn’t informed, they can refuse to give students a make up test (“How Is College Different from High School” SMU). That is the biggest change in test, because in high school students can make up their test whenever they like. They also don’t have to inform their teachers. So, a majority of college freshman struggle with the test.
Students struggle with the large amount of differences between high school and college; however, college isn’t that bad. The two different parts of education have some similarities. One of those is the classrooms. Most high schools have rooms with either desks or tables and chairs. They range from 35 student or less depending on how big the student’s high school was. In college, some classes have 100 students, but they are the more general classes. According to the article “High School vs College: Classes and Instructors”, when students get down to their specific classes towards their degree, the students will have classes with 20 or less students (“High School vs College: Classes and Instructors”). The amount of students mainly depends on how big the college is. Most students do not struggle with that change, but if they do, they usually adjust quite easily.
Another similarity with high school and college is the supplies for school. Most college students need the same supplies as high schoolers. Usually, the only difference in college is that some students need books and a computer. According to an article on “ECampusTours.com”, college students still need paper, pencils, binders, backpack, index cards, and maybe highlighters (“ECampusTours.com”). So, a majority of the supplies are needed for both college and high school, which is good because the students don’t have to worry about finding new supplies.
There is an enormous change from high school to college. The classrooms and supplies stay the same, but the learning environment, test, difficulty of assignments, and teachers change. Both of these educations have huge effects on students lives, and they will never forget the differences between.

An Outside View vs. An Inside View

In between the years 1992 and 1996, Jon Krakauer researched and wrote the book Into the Wild, telling the story of what happened to Chris McCandless. During the years 1990 to 1992, Chris McCandless lived the story Krakauer shared with the world. Both have different views because Chris McCandless experienced the events and Jon Krakauer shared the story.
Chris McCandless experienced the events from a first person point of view.  McCandless lived through those two years and made the story happen. After his college graduation, McCandless left and disappeared for two years. McCandless gave away his savings, left behind his invaluable possessions, and eventually abandoned his car. According to Jon Krakauer, author and researcher, “McCandless did not want to be a part of society anymore and that is what he accomplished.”(Krakauer 2 ). After getting rid of his car, no one had anything to track him down and it knocked him off the map. Since he did not have his car, McCandless traveled through America by hitchhiking and stopped along the way to get on his feet when he struggled. Even though he suffered from starvation, weight loss, no money, no place to stay, and several other things, McCandless kept going. It was like nothing could stop him from achieving his goal. McCandless met the people through his journey and got to know them. While he was with the people he met, he made relationships with them, even though he gave a fake name. McCandless was on the good side of everyone he met; they all enjoyed his company. He was the one who researched survival skills to live in the Alaska bush on his own.  Throughout his entire journey, he discovered more about who he was and separated himself from society. McCandless survived through those two years until he was injured in the bush. He’s the one who died trying to find himself. McCandless actually lived through the events unlike Krakauer.
Krakauer experienced the events in a third person point of view and learned about Chris McCandless by reading about him and researching. In 1993, he wrote an article about McCandless in Outside Magazine, which was when the story first caught his attention. Ever since he wrote the article, he has been trying to figure out the exact reason McCandless did not make it out of the Alaskan bush alive. Three years after the publishing of the article and research,  Krakauer published his book Into the Wild. The book provides readers an outside view of the occurrences over the two years Chris McCandless was unknown to society. He started by interviewing the family and friends he made over the two years. While interviewing, he learned his parent’s views and emotions, his sister’s views and emotions, and his friend’s views and emotions. The parents of McCandless had no idea what made their son want to disappear, but gave an insight on what type of person he was. His sister told Krakauer that McCandless despised their parents, but never seen his disappearance coming. His friends told about their experience with McCandless and who they believed he was. Krakauer learned their sides of the story before trying to learn and understand McCandless’ side. He looked through McCandless’ journal and pictures to try and get an inside perspective on what McCandless was thinking and why he left. Krakauer's entire insight on what happened was an outside view. He made his own opinions and tried to make sense of why McCandless did what he did. His experience learning about Chris McCandless was completely different from McCandless actually living through it.
Chris McCandless and Jon Krakauer told the story differently. McCandless’ side of the story is first person point of view. He told his side from the pictures he took and the journal he kept over the two years. The photos and journal entries give an insight of what McCandless was thinking and what he did over those two years. His photos show how he progressed over the two years and a view of the things he did. Some photos show his accomplishments, like animals he killed, or they are just photos of him. One photo is of him holding up a moose that he killed. Another photo is of him sitting in front of the bus with a smile on his face. The pictures vary as time went on. His journal entries give us an insight of why he actually went out and basically abandoned society. It also gives us a view of things he did along with the pictures. One entry goes along with killing the moose and he writes about how proud he is of himself for the kill. They give us information on how he felt about his parents, the places he went, and his emotions. His true feelings are unknown because he was unable to tell the story because he passed away before he could get out of the bush. Jon Krakauer tells the story from a different view than McCandless.
Krakauer tells the story from a different angle. His side is in third person. He was not there to experience the journey with McCandless, but he did give us an insight of what actually happened based on his research. Throughout the book, Krakauer gave his opinion and observation on what he learned about Chris. It was different because McCandless was there and lived the story, while Krakauer just put it to words. Krakauer published the book about McCandless in 1996 and an article about him in 1993. The book was written to show people what happened to Chris. Since McCandless couldn’t tell the story himself, Krakauer took it upon himself to do so.
Even though Chris McCandless and Jon Krakauer experienced and told the story differently, there are similarities between the two men. Both men were criticized for the story. McCandless was criticized because people believed he was not smart because he went out into the Alaskan bush. He was accused of not being educated about what is in the woods, what he could eat, what animals he could kill, and just basic survival tips. McCandless was actually educated about what he needed to do while staying the bush. As a result of McCandless being criticized for his death, Krakauer worked to prove those people wrong.
Krakauer tried to prove a point that McCandless did not die because he was “dumb” as people would call him. He worked so hard to figure out the real story of Chris McCandless, which led to his book Into the Wild. After the book was published, Krakauer received criticism for writing about. Readers viewed the book as unimportant because McCandless chose to go Alaska and it was his fault he died. Krakauer fought the criticism and worked to prove them wrong.
Chris McCandless and Jon Krakauer views for the story are not the same. McCandless experienced it first hand, while Krakauer served as an outside view on the story. Their views are different because McCandless faced all the obstacles and lived those years on the road, while Krakauer researched the story and shared it with the world. An outside view is entirely different from having an inside view and the experience.
