stress- sydney adams 12

Stress. S-T-R-E-S-S. A five letter word that can completely describe the universal sensation that any given person is probably experiencing.  Stress is different for every age group and every generation. The hardships and stresses our grandparents or even our parents faced and lost sleep over probably seem like bumps under the rug to our generation and they may not even know the struggles we face actually exist.
I do not believe a specific group of individuals have or had it worse than another. With each generation comes new, diverse problems and things to stress about.
For example, past generations faced the lack of innovation and technology that we are blessed (and cursed) with today. Many had to work to support their families from a young age and the jobs they did weren’t just filling ice cream cones and dealing with outrageous customers or riding in an air conditioned tractor cab; no, they did hard labor. In addition, they lived in our country before things like segregation, Cyndi Lauper, tragic crappy love songs and the unfair treatment of women and people of different ethnicities were overcome.
Yet young adults in this day and age are subject to more bullying as there are a multitude of outlets and ways to do so now, there’s various stresses caused by technology such as assignments and tests being switched to electronic versions leaving you to depend upon the computer, phone etc. or social media. Offenders or anyone who desires to do so can find a person with a simple google search needing little to no information about the person. That’s terrifying. This generation stresses about the lack of jobs and the fact that going to college and/or getting a good education is pretty much rendered worthless so should we even waste our money to get a degree that will serve as much purpose as a sheet of notebook paper. Our society is in a disgusting place, pressuring us to, either conform and become the standards they have set or to stress about how we can reshape change society completely.

There are countless things to stress over for everyone ranging from those in pampers to those in depends. Stress is a global epidemic, though when you take a step back and consider it, it’s unnecessary.
Stressing burdens our minds and bodies to no avail. Most of the time the things we are so keen on worrying about our completely out our control. All generations and age groups should take into consideration that there is absolutely no reason to stress everything, nothing good comes from it and we’d all benefit it we calmed down and thought without our minds being clouded by the nerve-wracking, worrisome, hostile unhappiness that comes from stress.

  1. I absolutely hate stress! I don't usually get stressed, but when I do, it just eats at me. I think you are right about different generations having different kinds of stress. My parents worry about completely different things than I do. Although, there are a few things we both stress over. For example, my grades and my future. I think they worry about that just as much, if not more, than I do. Stress really is unnecessary, and it definitely does not come with any benefits. Hopefully our junior year won't come with too much stress for us! -Hattie

  2. I completely agree with you about how stress isn't lost between ages ,and that neither of us have had it harder or easier than another. Stress is everyday with me because I over think every situation. But, sometimes I see that what I stress about ,was never really stressed about with my grandparents or even my parents. They had different things to worry about back then, that equal to different things we worry about. We have to worry about technology and tests more then some people had to back then. But, they had to worry about going to work every day during the summer at age fifteen to help there family. Which is why I do agree stress is universal to every one in different ways.

  3. Nicely put. I stress about everything. I'm even stressing about this right now. I agree with your stance on society. I think that everyone feels like they have to conform to society and it shouldn't be that way. I also agree that our generation should realize how truly lucky we are to live with such privileges. I really need to learn to not stress over the little things. If I was able to not care so much about perfection, school and life in general would probably be a lot less hectic and worrisome. Great job, Syd! I really enjoyed reading this.
