A breakdown of Fahrenheit 451 - Shailey Wooldridge
in a futuristic world where television sets are considered family, houses are fireproof, and cars typically don't go below the speed of 100 mph, Guy Montag is a local fireman; although there is a twist to this story, instead of putting out fires he starts them. The novel is set in the 2020's where firemen burn down houses where books are stashed. In the beginning of this novel Montag seems to quite enjoy is job, but after a encounter with his new neighbor Clarisse McClellan, a very perceptive seventeen year old with a absurd lifestyle, he realizes he is not as happy as he once thought. Montag tries to continue on with his normal life, but still talks to Clarisse everyday, and becomes more and more unhappy. One day he does not see her, later learning that she was hit by a car and killed, and goes on to work where they're called to go to an old women's home, where Montag steals a book. The women refuses to leave her home or books and is burnt along with them. Later that night Montag is guilt stricken and tries to talk to Mildred, his wife, about quitting his job; but the argument ends when Captain Beatty, his boss, comes to check up on him. Beatty begins to explain why they started burning books in the first place-- because the were too many things in books for people to disagree on. Mildred finds the stolen book under Montag's pillow, and tries to call attention to it. Beatty tells him that every fireman gets curious about books but he must return them within 48 hours, or his house will be burnt. After Beatty leaves Montag shows Mildred his stash of books and they read, looking for a reason behind his unhappiness, the problem is Montag doesn't understand what he's reading. Montag asks Faber, an ex english professor he met awhile back, to help him and Faber reluctantly agrees. Montag goes to work the next day to decrease suspicion, and a alarm goes off, signaling that someone had books and they needed to go burn their house down, but when they arrive Montag see's that it's his home. He is forced to burn down his own home, and is placed under arrest. Montag kills Beatty, and is suddenly on a police chase. He goes to Faber's home for last minute advice and learns that he is being chased by a mechanical hound. Montag loses the hound by escaping to the river. After a long while of walking he meets some men sitting around a campfire and they invite him to sit with them. He learns that the men are part of a team of people across the country who have created a method of remembering what they read word for word, and one day they'll bring back the world of books and knowledge. Montag joins them, becoming their backup book of Ecclesiastes. Suddenly bombs are dropped from the war and the city is destroyed. The book ends with them heading into the city to help the survivors rebuild.
