The alchemist begins by asking Geralt if he has the
books, Geralt does and the alchemist asks if he can look at them for a while.
Geralt gives him the books and the alchemist tells him to return in a little
while. This is another point where the player can do some side missions, since
now he can go to the swamp there are plenty of side missions there. This is
also a chance for Geralt to meet talk with the girl from the inn in the first
chapter. Her name is Shani and she is one of Giralt’s love interests in the
game (the other being the witch from the prologue, Trish). After doing some
side missions and talking to Shani, Geralt can return to the alchemist and
retrieve a list of objects he must find around the town and the swamp. Some are
given to Geralt when he completes side missions and some he can find in certain
places in the swamp and city. The alchemist also gives Geralt a stone that he
can use to teleport from the swamp to his house if he is in a special place
called a “Place of Power.” Before Geralt goes looking for the objects he talks
to the detective again, Geralt has eliminated all the suspects that the
detective gave him; so he asks the detective if he has any new leads. The
detective tells him that he hasn’t found anything, but Geralt finds something
strange about the detective when talking to him. Geralt goes against his gut
feeling and trusts the detective. He leaves and begins looking for the objects.
While finding one of them he discovers the body of the detective (the body had
been dead for quite a while), so Geralt suspects that the person who he has
been talking to is a mage using an illusion spell. Geralt does not act on his
suspicion because he finds out that it is the mage who broke into Kaer Morhen,
who is very powerful. He talks to the alchemist and discovers that the mages
powers would be weaker if he is near the tower. Because, the mages power is
based on fire elements and the tower is in the swamp, a place made up of mostly
water.
