Austin Cottingham-1- Summer projects
One of the many things that is happening with my family this summer is that we are fixing a new property for our whole family. This means going and clearing debris from the houses and shops that came with the property. So far I have spent many afternoons tending to this property and making sure that everything is getting done as well as being fixed and moved. I also have started many projects of my own out at this new homestead such as a forge or foundry, beekeeping, gardening, and many other projects in the works, like a custom workshop in one of the smaller shops, although it is a bit rough it will get the job done no matter what happens. One of the many important things I have learned is the ability to have some patience and persistence. I have had some help from my friends and family who have been interested in the certain projects that i'm starting from this new foundation of land. Diving in to more depth with these projects i'm going to start with the gardening. We are growing all sorts of plants that include, Corn, Cucumbers, Watermelons, Cantaloupe, Okra, Black Beans, Thai Chili Peppers, Ghost Peppers, Strawberries, Peppermint, Spearmint, Lavender, Onions, Radishes, and Pumpkins for this Halloween. Growing all of these plants and spices have been a challenge although a fun one at that . Most of the plants we take care of had to start in pots and then slowly grow into the ground once we planted them because the Arkansas soil is very sandy and dense. The next project that we started was the dynamic of a forge, this was a very tough project to achieve because of the amount of metal, bricks, time, effort, and design tweaks that helped it grow. It started as a fun idea then it developed into an actual thing. I cleaned bricks in my grandpa's back yard then started drawing a design that would allow me to know how many bricks to use. Then once you get all of the bricks together you have to get coals to burn and a blower that stokes the fire making it burn hotter. Then once you have all of that you have to find a crucible like the bottom of a fire extinguisher that we cut in half. Then you can throw your metals in the bottom of the crucible in the fire. Then either put the metals in a cast or beat them with a hammer to shape them into something you may need. One example would be the spikes I made to build the raised beds for the garden in the back of the property. Summer is full of fun projects at this new place, I will keep you updated.
Honestly, I gotta say, I’m a bit jealous. You’re doing so many fun things. I also have a garden growing, but it’s nowhere near as cool as yours, I’m sure—I’ve only been growing basil, tomatoes, bell peppers, squash, and cucumbers. Please, please, please keep us updated on that beehive—I think that’s super awesome. Most of my summer has consisted of yard work, so I feel for you. Honestly, some days it feels as if I’m in a forge because of how hot it is outside. At least I finally got a tan... Anyhow, I’m glad the start of summer has been kind to you, and that you’re pursuing all of these really cool ideas. I just know that they’ll turn out great. I may not make anymore assignment-based comments on anymore of your stuff because I want to get around to other people. Just know that I’ll be reading and keeping up-to-date with how you’re doing and how all of these projects of yours are progressing. Have a great summer!

DeleteYou're summer projects sound so cool. I'm wondering why in the world you thought about making a forge. Who helps you with all this? Good luck. You'll be ready for school to start back so you can have a break.
ReplyDeleteWell I wanted to make the forge to make spikes to make raised beds and things I need in the future, and no one has really helped me if you count me asking my dad where i could get cheap cement, and the neat thing about this is I didn't really buy any of it because it was all just scrap laying around

ReplyDeleteHonestly Austin, when you said that you were building a forge and a foundry, it immediately made me think about the game series Elder Scrolls. To the people who know what I am talking about, Skyrim is by far the best Elder Scrolls game that has ever been created to this day in my personal opinion. However, others might disagree with me because they are currently making a new Elder Scrolls and I’m really excited about that. If you don’t know what I am talking about then just don’t worry about it, it is just a video game. Although, what you’re doing sounds really really fun and I hope you have enjoyed doing it because it sure does sound like you have.
Dawg that honestly sounds pretty cool. Kind of agree with Bethany on the jealousy part because the stuff you are doing is really neat. Seems to me like you have had a pretty good summer based off of just this. But you have your hand in just about everything and have had a pretty busy summer. But just so you know I am going to be talking to you about all of this tomorrow because this is really cool. But I see you have your house down here for sell and I hope yall can find a buyer and get it sold. Good Luck with ll your projects!! See you tomorrow. (Ethan Boatman #10)
ReplyDeleteThat is awesome. I agree entirely with Bethany on being jealous. I like to work on things and clean up and build things. I have always wanted a forge to make knives and a bunch of other random things like armor and dog house. You know stuff that I don't need and won't use but it would be cool to have. I watch forged in fire all the time and I wish I could be able to do that. Make knives of my own and try to recreate historical masterpieces. It sound like you have quite a bit of work on your hands. Good luck, see you tomorrow.
