Everyone has that one thing they wish they could take back; that one word that ruined something great. I am among that "everyone." A few months ago, before my grandmother's passing, I pulled a move that some would call, "fine." At the time, it didn't mean anything, but now I constantly think about it and probably always will. Around July 10th, I was staying with my grandma. I was about to head out to go to a friend's house when my grandma got my attention. She grabbed my arm and said, "I hope you remember, I truly love you, boy." I didn't say it back, though. I kind of just smiled and said, "I know, Granny." It wasn't some incredibly rude thing to say because I know that she knew I loved her, but the point is: I didn't say it back. That was my one chance to tell my grandmother just how much she meant to me and how much I actually loved her, but I instead, I said something stupid like, " I know."
Missed opportunities are something we all regret, but I feel like that moment was more than just another, "better luck next time." I wish to use this as a reminder, as well as a writing prompt, make sure you care for those around you and make sure they know it.
