The Perspective of College and High School
College is something I have always dreamt about. What will it be like, how will I adapt to it, what are the differences, but what are the similarities? Sure college has a lot to offer, there are many perks! However, there are so many things that not everyone knows the answers to. Not even some college students. It is scary to think about and can be stressful. College is different, but in the end there are so many things relative to what we are used to.
Beginning with high school. High school is a breeze compared to college, that is work wise. In high school you are forced to learn the material, and you don’t have a choice but to do the work. This is because your teachers want you to become adjusted to not getting things your own way. It will not be like that in the real world. Things will not always go as planned, and people won’t agree with you one-hundred percent of the time. You’ll have bosses, your parents, even your future children that won’t see things the way you do. No one is exactly like you, and no one thinks exactly the way you do. That’s what they are trying to prepare us for. Most of our teachers do not give us loads of work just out of spite. They don’t want to constantly be grading, they want freedom too. They only want what is best for us. They’re doing their job, teaching us.
In college your professors couldn't care less about how much work they give you. College is all they have. They don’t want what is best for you, in fact they want you to fail. Because when you fail, they succeed, and that’s all they’re in it for. Sarah Heath (The Worst Professors You’ll Have in College) says, “I had a bad explainer, busywork assigner, unfair grader, and rude professor all in one. I didn’t know what I was gonna do!” Just because you don’t understand the material doesn’t mean that they care, or have any interest in helping. They get more of your money. It is only a job for them, and they simply do not care. In college if you don’t have the desire to put in extra effort and time you might as well not be there. That’s what college is. The willingness to put yourself out there, work hard, and if you work hard enough, you will succeed. You have to study, prepare, and even teach yourself things sometimes. Professors stress me out. I’m not looking forward to how much work they assign, how hard everything is, or how rude their attitudes are going to be. However, it’s going to be better in the long run. They’re only preparing me for my last step, adulthood.
One of the biggest benefits of college is that everything is optional. If you don’t want to be there you can go take a nap somewhere, if you want to party instead of study go right ahead, and if you want to go shopping with your best friends do it! You just have to realize that it is all on you. You mom isn’t there to give assign curfews anymore. You have to manage your time wisely, or you’ll fall behind. It’s completely, one-hundred percent your fault if you fail that test, get bad grades, or flunk college. So, that’s what you have to understand. Just because you’re finally free doesn’t mean you need to start making stupid decisions, and messing your life up. That is why time management is so important! Ross Rosenberg (Time Management Tips for New College Students) came up with helpful tips for new college students, helping them with their time management. The two that stuck out most to me were to prioritize your to do list and remove distractions. Those were the most important, and when you think about it, the ones we struggle the most with. When you go to college you have to learn how to start getting your life together! That’s such a big part of college. Not gonna lie, I’m not the best at it right now. I do everything last minute, and sometimes I don’t even do it just because I don’t want to. But, when I get to college it’s gonna be a completely different story. College is business, and that’s one thing that I fear. Because in a way, my whole life is at stake. If I fail college, I fail life. You can’t get anywhere without an education these days to be honest, or at least anywhere big. So, college is extremely important to me. All of my family went to college so I have to too. It’s a big accomplishment, and it’ll make them proud. I’m going to college for my mom, my grandparents, my future husband, and my future kids. This isn’t about me. This is all for them.
That’s one thing I strongly dislike about high school. I have to do all of my assignments, pass every single test, and impress all of my teachers. It’s like a requirement, which isn’t a bad thing, but not necessarily a good thing either. In college it won’t be that way. Literally no one will care about you, and in a way I can’t wait for it. It’s going to be a big relief going into a completely different school system. Not having so much pressure, so many people breathing down my neck twenty-four seven, and no one caring about my decisions. I’ll finally get to be my own person.
I know I’ll miss high school. I’ll miss it like crazy. Not seeing all of the same people that I have seen every day since seventh grade. That is gonna kill me at first, I’m sure I’ll cry a lot. I’ll probably fall behind because of it, but it’ll be a nice change for once. I’ll have realized how easy I had it, how much joy was surrounded by me, and how much other people impacted me. It’s gonna be a really sad day when I graduate. I think about it every single day. Saying goodbye to all the people I love, and who have left a mark on me. But, I think I’ll like it too.
One thing that doesn’t excite me about the whole idea of college is that I am going to be broke all the time. I don’t know if I’m mentally, or emotionally ready for that. I’ve never even had a job before and that’ll change too. I’ll have to get a job to support myself. There’s food, clothes, books, gas, and all my wants that I’ll have to pay for. It’s gonna be hard, and something that I’m not used to. I’ll get the hang of it, though.
In high school I never had to worry about anything like that. My grandparents and mom always provided for me, which I’m super grateful for. I never had to worry about anything, they always took care of me. So, this’ll be strange at first. Not having anyone to rely on. Everything will be on me, and I’ll be on my own for the first time in my life, which will be very strange.
What makes me the saddest is that I’ll, most likely, be moving out into a dorm, which is exciting too! I’ll be with friends, surrounded by people who relate to me, and having my own space will be nice. But, this is going to be the hardest for me because my mom, and my sisters mean the absolute world to me. I do not want to leave them. When I have to say goodbye to them, it’s going to be extremely difficult. They’ve been there for me every single moment of my life, through thick and thin, and I don’t even want to think about moving away. It’ll take a lot of getting used to at first, but I’ll adjust to college life rather quickly I feel.
College excites me so much, though! I’m not sure what I’m going to do yet. I wanna join a sorority, but most likely I’ll just be in a dorm. Sororities seem like a lot of time, dedication, and work anyways. So, I don’t know if I can be in a sorority, and deal with college work at the same time. It seems like a lot to handle. Maybe I’ll get to try, we’ll see. I’m excited!
I am so eager for college, and excited to see what the future holds for me. College is full of opportunities, and maybe one of these days I’ll get the opportunity of a lifetime. Everyone always says how college is the best four years of your life. However, college is going to be a lot of hard work, but I am more than ready to put in some effort!
