Austin Cottingham - 8 - Bass or not to Bass

When you think of guitar players you think of many famous players such as slash, mick, or even Joe Bonamassa (hint hint this is future foresight). Now let me ask you this question, can you name any famous bass players? I will give you a second. Times up could you name any? If  you could you probably could only name a few. These people often get swept under the rug, because of the main lead singer, guitarists, or amazing drum solos. This may not happen some of the time although if you think about it it happens a lot in our modern music industry. Let me ask a question that is long over due, and a simple one at that. Why are bassists not as popular as the lead guitar player? If anyone would let me know in the comments why this is true or not true would be really helpful for me, plus it would give you guys some more stuff to get that comment count up before the school year starts and the grades start flying. I took up the bass because I thought it would be a fun instrument and I like lower sounding instruments, they are always cool. Once I actually started practicing with the bass I realized that you can only do so much in terms of playing and supporting the sound of a band. I wanted to push these boundaries by going to some lessons at our local guitar shop Backbeat. The instructor started by asking me a few questions. He wanted to know my style and what kind of music I wanted to learn. This definitely could lead to a fun experience or hobby of mine. Once I walked into the bass room with the instructor I realized that I had jumped into a pool too deep for me to swim. The bass teacher work with me on chord structure and training my hand to conform to the neck of the bass and how to stretch my fingers out. The music I wanted to start with was mostly 80's with a touch of modern spin. The lessons were a lot better than I thought they would be. I will definitely take more in the future, maybe not when school starts because of the barrage of work and assignments. I am gonna say one thing then leave you guys alone. Lets make bassists popular, why not?

  1. Honestly, I agree that we should make bassists more popular. I'm primarily a guitarist/pianist, but I do believe that bassists deserve recognition for their talents. Personally, I'm a big fan of Nikki Sixx because I'm a Sixx A.M snob. I've been working a lot on guitar techniques, and I've wanted to head out to Backbeat for lessons for a really long time, I just haven't found the time to go out. I prefer more blues/jazz/R&B kinds of stuff, but to each their own I suppose.
Anyhow, I'll catch ya later. Keep up the good work.
