This coming school year will be Riverside High school's second year to have a mentor program. I think that it is a great idea to have a mentoring program, every school should have one. In the mentoring program, juniors and seniors are assigned 2 or 3 junior high kids that we are responsible for. I am a junior this year so I have the privilege of being a mentor. I cannot wait to meet my mentees this Thursday.
Being a mentor means a lot to me. I decided to sign up because I've always wanted to be the type of person that everyone knew they could trust and could count on. I just want to be a role model. This year's program will be a little different then last years. The mentors will also have a mentor that is a teacher at the school. I think that this is a great idea because there will be times when I will need to talk to someone about my mentee or just need someone to vent to and now I do! I cannot wait to get started with my mentees this coming school year. Our kiddos assigned to us will be coming to us with their problems, their thoughts, and will probably just want to have someone to talk to. My goal as a mentor this year is to help and listen to my kids and to leave an impact on them. I will try my hardest to be a great listener and be very compassionate to my students.
We, as mentors, will have to be active listeners and interact as much as possible with our mentees. For example, smiling at my mentees in the hallway or asking them how their day was. Interaction is the key
I am really excited about being a mentor this year. I hope that I can be a good role model to my students. I'm also looking forward to interacting with my mentor as well. I pray that the mentor program continues to prosper in the years to come because it is such a great program.
