Storms!
By: Emily Fry
That day started out as an okay day. I woke up to the sun
shining through my window, thinking the day was going to be good. It was around
eight o’clock that morning when I got the call from my aunt asking me if I
wanted to go skating with her and her kids. Not having anything to do today, I
decided to go spend the day with her family.
It was close to seven o’clock that night when Tissy, my mom’s
sister, finally pulled into the driveway. All ready to go I walked outside and
noticed that the sky was getting darker than what it normally would be mast
late afternoons, but ignoring that, I go into the car anyway.
After pulling out onto the highway headed toward Monette,
Tissy sees this yard sale that she just had to go to because like my mother,
she loves to spend money. At this yard sale, Tissy told her kids not to get out
because she wasn’t going to get them anything, but, of course, all her kids
jump out of the car at the first sight of a toy that catches their eye.
When she realized that she didn’t have the cash on her and
that the woman wasn’t going to accept a check, we all ended up going to the ATM
down the road form the yard sale. When at the ATM, the wind started to pick up,
and the sky got even darker. It eventually started to rain a light drizzle as
we pulled out once again on the highway getting into the turning lane.
Right before turning off the highway, the wind was at full
speed blowing things here and there, the rain had picked up to falling down
hard, and looking ahead, we couldn’t see anything from all the dust and rain
that smeared the windshield. Tissy, not knowing what to do, just stopped in the
turning lane and didn’t go anywhere, hoping that others cars would do the same
so no one would get in a wreck.
The little storm only lasted for about five minutes at the
most before passing by and clearing the sky, but it was scary just being on the
highway, not knowing and not being able to have a clear view of what others are
doing around you.
Emily,
ReplyDeleteI actually remember this day, which is amazing because I don't remember a lot of things. The only reason I remember this storm is because your description was so close to my personal experience. While reading this your voice telling the story actually came into my head and I liked how simple and clear your description was. The only criticism is that there were a few time when the past and present tense got mixed up, but it was great.

Storms are cool. Kind of like roller coasters... Exciting for a short time, but you're relieved when you make it through alive!
