Elijah couch 1

Today I did something I have never done before, I went snagging at the locks near Marked tree. For those of you who aren't much of a fisherman I'll explain it for you. To snag something and do it well your fishing pole must be long and stiff. You can do it without a long and stiff pole but you wont get as much speed or distance with your pull. My granddad recommended having a ten to thirteen foot pole with eighty pound fishing line or more. We had somewhat of a difficult time snagging stuff because the anti-reverse on my granddad's reel wasn't working. I had to keep a tight grip on the reel because the current and the fish were so strong that if you didn't have a tight grip that current would sweep all your line away or the fish is going to take it to the end of the line and snap it like a twig. Alright I got off track back to explaining snagging. When you snag a fish or turtle or whatever you don't always hook its mouth because you don't sit and wait for a bite. We caught most of ours through the back, side of the head or gills, we didn't hook one through the mouth at all. You constantly are jerking that pole backwards as hard and fast as you can and reeling as quick as possible therefore making it hard to hook its mouth. The hook we used was also way to big for any of the fish to bite and we weren't using bait. We caught mostly the invasive species known as Asian Carp but my brother did catch a pretty good size gar. The gar was about a foot long or so but the carp was about two foot long and fifteen to twenty pounds. We fished there for about an hour and a half or two hours then quit because the heat was absolutely terrible and we didn't have any shade and we were hungry. We stopped at McDonald's and ate then went on down to the siphons on the levee which I think is close to Caraway. We tried snagging fish there too but we didn't have any luck. My uncle wasn't using snagging pole though, he was using his crappie pole and he caught a little drum fish. That is everything I have done today, I just got home like an hour or two ago. That all I got so I'll be back tomorrow.

  1. Hey Elijah! This is my last comment and you should be proud of me. I just saw you not to long ago at Arkansas State University Newport. Did you ever pass your test? I didn't get a chance to ask. The people I were sitting by were kinda scary.. not gonna lie. It's really cool that you're so into fishing. I like to fish but I never get to go. And don't you have to be quiet when fishing because it scares off the fish? Lord knows I can't be quiet that long.. maybe that's why my family never takes me hunting! lol see you tomorrow.
