A Day of Work -Hattie Milligan

There is this lady at my church that everyone loves. She plays the piano in the church band, she cleans, and she makes the best coconut cake on the face of the planet. Recently her husband got very sick and had to enter a nursing home; therefore, no one is around to do yard work and keep her house in good shape. So, my youth group and I decided that we would help out this sweet old lady.
We got up and around at eight o’clock on a Saturday morning and met at the lady’s house. When we got there we automatically saw that things needed to be taken care of. A few people trimmed bushes, cut branches, and did yard work. Some people even played with the dog. Others, including myself, painted the trim of the house, the car port, and the windows all around the house. It was tiring work, but it was fun. We had to use rollers to paint the car port and we somehow managed to get paint all over ourselves. I somehow got a huge white streak in my hair. I kind of looked like that woman on What Not to Wear. We managed to get everything painted and looking good in one day. Afterwards, we grilled hamburgers and hotdogs and ate ice cream. Before we left we all sat outside and just talked to the old lady for a while. The next day at church, everyone was so sore and some people still had paint on themselves.

Even though it was super hot and tiring work, it felt good to do. The lady was so happy that we could be there and help her. I think our company in itself brought her so much joy. One of the best feelings in the world comes from doing something for someone who isn’t able to do it themselves. I would spend every Saturday morning doing what we did just to see the lady smile and be so happy. Philippians 2:4 says, “Let each of you look not only to his own interests, but also to the interests of others.”

  1. hey hattie! I'm so glad that you had such a great experience helping this woman out. I, like you, am very appreciative of the older generation of the church. They do so much for all of us, and its the least we can do to help them out every once in a while. Your youth group will surely be blessed for doing this for that sweet old lady! Last summer, I painted my grandma's friend's back porch for her. It was a great experience for me! I got paint all over myself and burnt up, but I had a great time talking to her and hearing her stories. She was so interesting and was genuinely interested in me, too! I love that verse that you shared. Hebrews 13:16 ESV says, "Do not neglect to do good and to share what you have, for such sacrifices are pleasing to God." -- karlee sanders

  2. Dear Hattie,
I think that was a very great thing for you to do for an elderly woman who was in need. It's important to remember that we are messengers for God, and are meant to do good deeds to show the good examples and miracles that Jesus performed. Over all that sounded like you had a lot of fun helping someone who really needed help. I really like the feeling that I made another person smile, and made them feel good. I'm glad you're a friend of mine, I'm very lucky to know you!
