Careers -Hattie Milligan

I have always been very indecisive about what career I want to pursue when I graduate. My choices have always been something to do with the medical field. My choices have always been between an orthopedic surgeon, an ophthalmologist, or a nurse anesthetist. I just don’t know which one I will choose or if I choose one of those three at all. They are all different, and they all have qualities that attract me to it.
An orthopedic surgeon is a doctor that works with bones, joints, ligaments, tendons, and muscles. So, if you were to tear your ACL, they would be the ones to fix it. Most orthopedic surgeons work in hospitals, but some surgeons sometimes go solo. Some of the surgical procedures they perform include mending broken bones, reattaching ligaments and tendons, and replacing hips and joints with prosthetic devices. This just seems like such a cool job.
An ophthalmologist is probably my least favorite of the three careers. An ophthalmologist is an eye doctor that specializes in diagnosing eye diseases and treating eye injuries. They are not the eye doctors that test your eyesight and give you glasses. These eye doctors do surgeries. They sometimes perform laser surgery and keyhole surgery. This career doesn’t sound as exciting as the orthopedic surgeon career.
Next on the list is the nurse anesthetist. A nurse anesthetist is an advanced practice nurse that works in collaboration with anesthesiologist, surgeons, and other physicians and medical professionals to deliver anesthesia for medical and surgical procedures. They don’t actually do surgeries, but they put the people on the table to sleep. So, they do get to sit in on the surgeries.

Overall, all three careers have struck my eye. On orthopedic surgeon would probably have a more unpredictable day, which I want. I do not like routine. An ophthalmologist would probably have more manageable hours. The nurse anesthetist would be able to watch many amazing surgeries.  I have a lot of considering to do. I know God will lead me down the path I need to take. So I have no reason to worry.

  1. I am also confused about which career path to take when I get older. I would really like to work in the medical field as well. For example, a NICU nurse. All 3 of theses jobs sound really cool. I think being an orthopedic surgeon would be amazing. It sounds like the tipe of job you would have, lol. You are super smart Hattie so I know that you could be the best at which ever job you choose. You are going to do big things in the future for sure. I know that you will trust in God so that's all you need! Love you
