Jobs part three out of four # 7 --Jo Baker-
So far I've told you about two of the four things I hope to become when I get older. I have told you about becoming an architect, and a tattoo artist. This next job is one I also feel I would be good at. I want to become a pediatric surgeon. Let me tell you about this job and why I want to become one.
A pediatric surgeon is a person who specializes in helping kids from infant ages all the way up to teens. From the beginning they're trained to be able to help with a huge ray of conditions from each specific child development age, or age in children up to teenagers. They help them by performing surgeries, being able to surgically repair of birth defects, and the treatment of trauma in children. There are many more ways they treat there patients but there's a few for now. This isn't all you have to do though in this field of work. You have to have good people skills because you have to consult with a lot of different people for each patient you help. For example, you have to consult with other pediatricians, neonatal specialists, and family physicians to decide the best course of treatment for the patient. Along with these people you also have to talk to the family to decide the safest before and after plan. You have to be able to talk to them and keep them filled in on there child. You have to have good bed side manner.
But before you can get the actual job you have to meet the education requirements. Starting out you have to get your bachelors degree. You get this by completing four years worth of work in pre-medicine or a similar field having to do with science. Next, you have to complete another four years of medical school. Then you have to go through several years of residency training.
Meeting all these education requirements helps you with getting your license and certification requirements. To get this you have to complete an amount of education and training. Getting your bachelors degree and completing medical school and your residency training help fulfill your education and training requirements. After this you will be given an exam where you have to have a passing score to continue. After passing the exam you will be graduated. But you're still not done. After this you will complete another five years in general surgical residency training. After completing all of these things you will have to take your boards. Your boards is an examination on you as a surgeon to become board-certified in general surgery by the American Board of Medical Specialists (www.abms.org). After you pass your boards you are officially a surgeon. Then if you wish to specialize in pediatrics you may complete a two-year pediatric surgery residency. after these two years in this residency you will go through another examination. If you pass this examination, you will receive a certificate in pediatric surgery from the American Board of Pediatrics (ABP). You have to be re-certified after every ten years.
Along with all of these things, you have to have the right skills to actually do the job. As a pediatric surgeon, you have to be concerned on every detail of everything for your patient. Their needs, wants, concerns, everything. You have to be concerned and understand the patient because becoming a pediatric surgeon involves taking care of patients of all stages of child development. You have to have a crystal clear understanding of many things to treat your patient, and to treat them right. Here is a few examples of the things you have to understand : pharmacology, child physiology, and an excellent aptitude for extreme precision in treatment. Along with these things, a very important one is being able to be sensitive yet honest with people. Because you are interacting with families and patients ninety percent of the time. This is a huge part of the job.
According to Payscale.com in 2016 the salary for a pediatric surgeon is $262,674 per year. The demand for surgeons has grown in rural and low-income areas around country. These countries have fewer medical resources, so it's harder to help people and take care of them in these areas. According to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS) there will be a 14% growth rate for job opportunities for physicians and surgeons of all types over the 2014-2024 decade.
The medical field is growing. We went from creating “small” things like adhesive bandages, ankle braces, casts, slings, to larger, more complex technologies like MRI machines, artificial organs, robotic prosthetic limbs, and things like cat scans, that allow you to get a closer look at whats wrong. Healthcare News & Insights stated "Improving quality of life is one of the main benefits of integrating new innovations into medicine. Medical technologies like minimally-invasive surgeries, better monitoring systems, and more comfortable scanning equipment are allowing patients to spend less time in recovery and more time enjoying a healthy life."
The medical field has grown so much since the beginning of time. Who knows what it's gonna be like in twenty or thirty years. I want to be a part of that growth that continually gets to try to help people and save lives. This is a career that I really hope I might one day be ready to take on. It will be a lot of hard work and I'm sure there will be heart ache to. But I want to have the chance to help people. I hope I get to become this, or something close to it.

This is great information about a pediatric surgeon. I think that any of these jobs you pick would be great. Working with kids would be great if you like kids. Personally I love kids and that's why I want to work with babies. I want to be a labor and delivery nurse. These fields require some of the same things. Some are being kind and honest with the patients. Also knowing what the patient needs and how to help them is very important. I hope you figure out which job you want and love it. - Chloe Reese
