Saving for a car is almost a right of passage for most teens. A vehicle is the strict line between yet another layer of independence from your parents during adolescence, since along with being able to drive, you gain the ability to have personal control over something that normally would have required an adult touch, whether it is using your parents car or having your parents actively take you places like to school, sporting events ,or even just to your friends house.
For the last couple of months I too, have been taking part of the age old tradition of scrounging for pockets change and the odd dollar to stash away in a discreet locations in the hope of one day having a car of my own. But beyond the challenge of now trying to save the money you originally could be spending on the little things you want, the issue of self control and budgeting enters the field. Self control with my spending has been the biggest obstacle of the journey, since I no longer have the disposable income I used to I find myself torn between setting aside more of my money or just spending it and trying to save more at a later time. I am trying to use this new found sense of self control in a constructive way, maybe once I reach an amount where I can buy a cheap pick up, I can start saving for college. Yet another useful skill that comes from throwing a handful of change into a jar every time you clean out your pockets.
