My Brother: Haven Robertson

My brother's name is Brady Robertson. He is 11 years old and is pretty much just a regular kid, but, my brother has a learning disorder called Dyslexia. Brady has always had trouble in school. For example, he has never been able to read, pay attention, or even write as satisfactory as the other students his age. So, at the beginning of third grade, Brady moved to Concordia Christian Academy in Jonesboro to hopefully help him progress in his learning skills.
Dyslexia is very common. People with dyslexia have a very difficult time in learning to read and interpreting words and letters. Dyslexia affects the way the brain processes languages. It is a lifelong condition, but there are many teaching strategies and tools used to help people with dyslexia. For example, at Concordia where my brother goes to school, they have trained teachers and tutors there who work individually with my brother to give him the time and proper teaching he needs.
Before Concordia, my brother went to a public school up until the third grade. Brady had a very tough time. He never understood the teachers and always had a very hard time with homework. My family and I immediately saw a difference in Brady after he was tested for dyslexia and moved to Concordia. Even with the hard time in school, my Brady finds his outlet in sports and in art. Brady has always loved baseball. He started football a couple of years ago on a Jonesboro league. It was  a new sport for him but he turned out to be pretty good at it! He has also always loved art. I am amazed at some of his paintings and drawings he makes. It makes my heart so happy to see Brady excel in art  and sports. He never fails to have a smile on his face. You could never tell that he has a hard time at school.
As you can see, Dyslexia is a very serious condition that I think some people just push to the side. Brady has a hard time even reading and spelling the simplest things. He is so strong to have to deal with this condition but still be a positive and happy little boy. I can't wait to see what my brother accomplishes one day.

  1. Aww, I love Brady. He is such a funny and great kid. I am sure that it is very hard to deal with dyslexia and still be as happy as Brady always is. You really can't tell that he has dyslexia by just hanging out with him. I'm glad that he has found a love for baseball, football, and art too. I know Brady will accomplish a lot one day. It is good that he doesn't have to go through the dyslexia by himself. He has a great big sister and an amazing mom and dad. Your family is one of my all time favorites! -Hattie
