Braces--Karlee Sanders

I have had braces for the past 14 months. It’s been a rough ride. While I love the idea that my teeth are getting straight, braces are absolutely the worst. First of all, who on Earth came up with the idea to glue metal bits to teeth and strap a wire on them with some tiny rubber bands in order to make them straight? Sounds heavenly, right?  NOT. I was just one of the lucky ones. Some people have braces for years. YEARS. Others have headgear, expanders, and/or herbst appliances. And that’s only some of the things that orthodontists use. (What a word, right? Orthodontist. If you asked a little kid what they wanted to be when they grow up, I bet they couldn’t even say the word “orthodontist”.) Some “orthos” use twin blocks, bite plates, and holding arches that alter the structure and overall look of the mouth of whoever they are administering orthodontics to. Besides all of the terrible, awful appliances that could have only been invented by the horrendous monsters who take bites out of their Kit-Kats instead of breaking them apart and eating them like civilized humans, there are other parts to having braces that make them the worst thing to happen to someone. Not being able to eat food wholly is one of them. Instead of enjoying an apple, sandwich, or corn on the cob, or practically any other food that you are obligated to bite into, a person who has braces has to cut (and in some cases, peel) that apple, break that sandwich up and try not to get the bread in your brackets, and worst of all, take the corn OFF THE COB. Oh, the humanity! Lastly, braces are straight up painful. Like I said earlier, while wearing them, the mouth is being completely changed, which inevitably causes pain and discomfort. The metal and rubber in your mouth puts imprints on the inside of your mouth, cuts you, causes ulcers, and pokes you beyond belief. To prevent the pain, cuts, and poking, braces-wearers have to take lots and lots of ibuprofen and press gross wax on to their brackets. Luckily, I am very close to getting my braces off. I only have a couple weeks left. I’m very excited to end this part of my life and move on!

  1. Karlee, I feel your pain on so many levels with braces. I have had them for almost 2 years. With rubber bands to the changing of wires, it all stinks. And yes, not being able to eat certain foods wholly stinks. Id rather just be able to set down and enjoy some food without having to do certain things to it to make it easier to eat. And being poked by a wire is probably the worst thing about having them. Just hang in there for a little while longer, them couple of weeks will be here before you know it.

  2. I admire how patient and strong you are for dealing with this torture. I won't have been able to deal with it. Knowing me, I would always get my lip caught on them and would constantly ask when my teeth were going to be straight. I remember how sore my friends' mouths were when they got them tightened and had expanders put in. I also remember going to the store to get the wax bottle candy for my friend when she ran out of wax and was hurting. Good idea, right? I can't even imagine how people who have them for years feel.

  3. kbabes, I've felt your pain. having braces was a long road filled with pain, mashed potatoes, and food-filled brackets(so, SO gross), but getting them off was an unbelievable feeling. I'm so excited for when you get to get yours off!! you're gonna be so beautiful(you already are but not having braces totally helps your confidence, trust me). although, I'm thinking that I'm going to have to get my upper frenulum(the piece of skin that connects your top lip to your gums) removed, because before I got braces, my orthodontist said that it could be causing the huge gap in my front teeth, and now that my braces are off, my gap is coming back :( so, I'll update you when I go back to the orthodontist next month -Faith Brooks(13)
