After joking about it on various occasions, a little bit of research and the abandonment of anything that resembled shame, Larry and I decided to partake in the journey that is hot yoga.
For those who are unaware of just what hot yoga is, its bending and stretching your body in unfathomable ways in a dark room that is heated to 100 degrees while a very chill yogi plays Christian jams and tells you whats up. or at least that was our experience.
This exciting exercising expedition began with a 6 am wake up call, a pep talk, a list of precautions and things to bring, a cranky, foodless drive to downtown Jonesboro and finally arriving to a class at the nirvana yoga studio consisting of all women-young and old-with the exception of a very limber, very serious, very old man who had done his fair share of hot yoga.
We removed our shoes, rented our mats and groggily tried to converse with other fetus yogis and entered into the furnace. Okay, it wasn't a furnace yet because we actually turned on the heaters as we picked our spots but it certainly wasn't cool. We unpacked our towels and put on our brave faces as the instructor began. First, it was easy stuff like childs pose and downward facing dog but gradually we became unbalanced, knotted masses. A perk to yoga is that though it isn't exactly easy it is very repetitive which helps you master each pose or at least learn to stay upright. After an hour we were stanky and starved but relaxed and happy.
All in all hot yoga was definitely an adventure with a positive pay off. And a very convenient excuse to eat lots of Chinese food following. I really enjoyed it and i don't like any form of exercise so that's saying a lot. Even Larry said he had fun, despite the fact he told me not to tell anyone he did yoga. Its not for wimps of those prone to excessive sweating seeing as it would probably cause slipping or something like that. Its completely worth the 10 dollars and you might actually find that youre a yogi at heart.
Things you should know before doing hot yoga:
bring a towel, a change of clothes and A LOT of water
its called hot yoga for a reason
everyone sucks at yoga so don't feel self conscious
most classes are open level meaning its ideal for beginners but challenging enough for experienced folk
bring your own mat unless you want to rent one that has been contaminated by the sweat and tears of unprepared yogis before you
they are very small classes
you probably wont be able to do everything
you're also going to wobble and maybe even fall
its definitely worth trying
BONUS: IT FEELS COLD OUTSIDE WHEN YOU LEAVE BECAUSE ITS SO HOT IN THERE.
hot yoga sounds cool besides the sweating and exercising part. sweating is gross and exercise is awful but maybe yoga could be fun I guess?? I'd like to go with you sometime because I want to experience being a "yogi" but I don't want to go alone. my mom used to do yoga and jog and she lost a lot of weight which I need to do so doing yoga might be beneficial to me, but I feel like it takes a lot of yoga for people to lose weight, so maybe I shouldn't do it? ReplyDeleteMy sister tried to take me to hot yoga once, but after she described it I told her absolutely not. I also said that yoga was for dirty hippies. But the way you described it made it sound really fun. Also I think it is really funny that you took Larry with you and he actually did yoga. You should take me some time :))) -- Shailey

ReplyDeleteAlthough I have never partaken a class of hot yoga, I have done one class of PiYo, which is a mixture of Pilates and yoga. I did not like it at all, but it may just be the Pilates that I didn't like. It's cool that Larry did hot yoga with you. Why not just do regular yoga? I'm sure you'd still get hot, right? I may try a class one day and see for myself how "worth trying" it is because you and Shailey seemed to like it the times y'all have been. Gotta blast
