The beginning of a book that I'm never going to finish writing - Shailey Wooldridge

This is a Dream

Wednesday Grace Westing had a heart of pure gold and a love for God and people unlike any other. On the outside she was the poster child for what parents dreamed their children would be. She was respected, adored in life as well as death. She was always the favorite twin and it was a wonder that I did not hate her. Behind closed doors she was much more than book smart and beauty. she talked of Greek mythology, played ukulele and tried to learn Swahili. She was tough, much more so than myself ; she could rise above anything life threw at her. When our father left and our mother fell into herself she held our tiny broken family together and it felt like we were whole.. How far from the truth that actually was. She exceeded intelligence. She exceeded beauty. One thing I'm for sure of is that she would have changed the world one day if she had learned to keep her temper in check, then her chance to be great would not have been taken from her. No I did not hate my sister at all, she was the one person I loved the most in the world.
Looking back I can't help but wonder if Wednesday is the reason I came to have such a deep regard for Saylor. The two were not even comparable, the only similarity being the anger they both let themselves be engulfed by. Although I know Wednesday wasn't perfect she was truly good. Whereas Saylor was at one point in time but let herself play victim her entire life up until she self destructed. There was something there though, something I managed to catch a glimpse of, something in her that reminded me of Wednesday and I desperately wanted to hang onto that even though every fiber of my being was screaming "no no no no no no no." I wasn't searching, believe when when I say that, but maybe when I got to know the shimmering flicks or gold beneath the purple lenses she had qualities that were shared with my late other half and it felt like coming home.
I wish I could have saved her, my gosh I wish I could have. But you cannot save a person from themselves and the sooner you realize that the sooner it becomes easier to bear the weight of the loss. Regardless I could not stay away, and that's where my story began, and also where it ended.

  1. finish this book because it is my belief that what you have to say deserves to be read. you're going to go far kid and I think that writing is your knack. Don't give up because you have the skill to do something great- like writing books that will provoke feelings in people around the globe- and this excerpt from the book you most certainly should continue writing is remarkable and I wish to read more. Look at it this way, you're obviously going to sell millions of books because you've already killed a beloved character (just as all good writers do)and therefore we are all hooked and ready for more. So, keep writing trim murphy, keep writing. -Sydney Adams

  2. Shailey this is amazing. You are so skilled in writing and one day, I hope you become an author or journalist or just someone who writes things because the way you write is beautiful. Throughout reading this, I could see the girl you were describing. I could see how she acted and how deeply she loved. Throughout reading this, I couldn't stop thinking, "how did a 16 year old write this?". This is just the beginning of so many great things for your future, Shailey. This book will be the book that I buy copies of every time I see it in a store because of how much I love you and your writing. I can't wait to find out more about Saylor and the narrator's relationship and what happened to Wednesday. You are so extraordinary, Shailey Wooldridge.

  3. I agree completely with Sydney and Faith. I am so mesmerized that you even wrote this, because it certainly is better than some things I've read by adults. It truly has the makings of a great story. I applaud you for being brave enough to share your talent with everyone on this blog. I know you were nervous about posting this, but you had no reason to be, because it's great! You have great things coming your way! As Faith said, I could definitely see the people you were writing about in this excerpt. Creating imagery such as you do is something I struggle with in my writing, so I'm very impressed. I believe that you could finish this book and become famous, I really do. Honestly, I would love to read it. I can't wait to find out more about Saylor, Wednesday, and the narrator. Happy writing! -Karlee Sanders
