What's up? Harrison McCall #3
So just in case you guys have missed my famous rants here's one to tie you over for the summer. This rant is to be used when asked the question what's up, sup, what is up, up, or any of the sort. No any of the sort is not a question it is just providing the information that any question resembling the before mentioned questions could be answered in this manner. Yes I did add that last sentence to add overall length to this post. As well as that one. Anyway, on to the rant. To answer what is up we must establish what up is, which up is out. This is because up is the relative outward direction away from its reference point. You see if you were to look straight "up" from your location right now that you would say that is up. However, on the exact opposite side of Earth that would be directly down to someone standing on that point. This is true for any two points that pass through the center of the Earth. That is because we use gravity as a reference to figure out which way is up. Up is the opposite direction of the main gravitational force in any given point. If you were to imagine being in a room that was completely black with no gravity or any sort of reference how would you tell which way is up? You couldn't, because there would be no reference point. You would normally feel gravity pull you down and the opposite of down would be up. Without a reference point that means that any direction could be up (could be not is, there is an up and down it is just impossible to determine the two), because without a reference point every direction is out, therefore up, or down or left or right or any direction. Because all directions go out from the center. Back to that room, if you were to pick a direction to be up, the darkness could fade and gravity restored and it turn out that you are pointing left. This is just to show the point that up is a direction and all directions are out. Thanks to our if/then statements, if up is a direction then up is out.

This was very good to know. I frequently find myself in a dark room without gravity because the aliens lock me in it. I always have trouble finding up, so you could imagine that I never could get out on my own. (You know the aliens, they stole your heart, remember? Good times.) I'm kidding. Seriously though, this was actually interesting. I never really think about subjects like this and it's very intriguing to learn about. Almost as fun as you and Rocklan's Newton vs. Einstein debate. I honestly don't know how long this is because I'm too lazy to count so I'm just going to hope it is. Have fun with whatever you're doing right now. -Kim Wilson
ReplyDeleteI can honestly say I have missed your rants. This one is always a favorite and I agree with you claims about up being out. The science behind it is a little shaky if you haven't heard it about 20 times (like I have, we have literally talked about way to much). I hope we can think of a ton more rants to annoy our fellow class mates during the new school year. We'll have to meet up and plan out the ultimate rant. Keep up the great writing and have a great school year.
